Lions Sweep Lightning on Senior Night

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Nov. 2, 2022) - Georgian Court Volleyball celebrated the final home game of the season and senior night in style with a 3-0 sweep of Goldey-Beacom. The Lions dominated early with a 25-10 win in set one before taking the final two sets 25-17 and 25-19.

Prior to the match, Georgian Court celebrated their senior class of 2022 with an on-court ceremony to recognize Jana Borkovic, Alexa Houston, Trilby Kite and Jessica Sprankle. Kite made her way to the court for her senior night after having not played since Sept. 2 due to injury.

How it Happened
• It was all Lions from the start. They doubled up the Lightning in total points, 60-30 and kills 40-20.
• Georgian Court also landed 14 service aces with six errors while the Lightning were an even six aces and six errors.
• GCU hit better than .300 for the match at .303 and held GBC to a .087 attack percentage.
• The Lions picked up where the left off last match with six total blocks. Goldey-Beacom put back 3.5 blocks. 
• The match started off on an emotional note with all eligible seniors in the starting lineup. Trilby Kite took the first serve, two months to the day since her last match. The Lions made sure to keep her on the line as they scored the first six points. Kite contributed with back-to-back service aces after four straight Nylene Mateo kills. 
• The Lions lead was never in jeopardy that set. Leading 10-5, GCU went on another big run, 13-1 to break it open to a commanding 23-6 lead. Alexa Houston landed three kills during the stretch and GCU easily took set one 25-10. Georgian Court hit .538 in the first set with 15 kills to one attack error. They also landed six service aces.
• Set two was much more back-and-forth at the outset and midway through the frame Goldey-Beacom found themselves up four, 15-11. The Lions though roared back scoring five straight for a 16-15 lead and never trailed again. Trilby Kite added another service ace and Amiyah Woods landed a kill and a solo block. 
• The Lions ended the set on a 14-2 run and scored the final six points. A block from Woods and Alexa Houston ended the set 25-17.
• Leading by two early in set three, Georgian Court rattled off five straight points with two Mateo aces to jump out to a 10-3 lead. Goldey-Beacom was able to cut the lead down to four, but GCU was happy to trade points and scored three of the final four to put the match away 25-19. 

Lion Stat Leaders
• Nylene Mateo hit .500 with 17 kills and just two errors. She also added three service aces and 11 digs.
• Amiyah Woods scored 11 points with nine kills and three blocks including one solo.
• Alexa Houston landed seven kills and two blocks with three digs.
• Iciar Zayas passed out a match-high 20 assists and came a dig shy of a double-double.
• Jessica Sprankle picked up 10 assists and seven digs with three service aces.
• Trilby Kite chipped in three service aces and a dig.

For the Lightning
• Shayla Boyce finished with a team-high 11 kills and three blocks.
• Piper Nanouski added five kills and six digs.
• Autumn Spendlove passed out 18 assists with five digs.
• Nina Bongiovanni scooped out a team-high seven digs. 

News and Notes
• The Lions .303 attack percentage was their best in a match this season.
• GCU's 14 service aces are the second-most in a match. They have 25 in their last two matches, most in any two-game span this season.  
• Emma Gildea and Jessica Sprankle each surpassed 150 career points.
• Sprankle also moved into the GCU top-10 in career digs with 627.
• Nylene Mateo hit career kill number 750. She now has 423 kills this season, fourth-most for a single-season ever at GCU.
• Amiyah Woods scored her 250th career point.
• Iciar Zayas moved into the GCU top-10 for single-season assists with 768.
• Georgian Court will finish the season with a winning record at home, 7-6. It's their fifth straight season with a winning record in Lakewood.

• The season comes to an end this Friday, November 4 at Bloomfield. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
