Women's Basketball Starts Season with Exhibition at Delaware State

DOVER, Del. (Nov. 2, 2022) - Georgian Court Women's Basketball took the floor for the first time for an exhibition against Division I Delaware State. The Lions fell short to the Hornets 71-50.

In total, 12 Lions saw action in the first exhibition of the season and eight scored. The team was led by Savawn Hughes who played 28 minutes going 4-11 from the floor with a three and six rebounds. Jariah Patterson was also in double-figures with 10 points.

Off the bench, Imani Gillette scored nine going 2-6 from the field and 5-7 at the free throw line. She also collected six boards. Erika Aspajo chipped in six points and Precious Adediran added five. A'nya Harper was 2-2 with six rebounds and two blocks. 

As a team, the Lions were 19-59 from the field and 4-17 from three. They made 8-14 free throws. Georgian Court blocked four Hornet shot attempts. They also pulled down 36 rebounds with nine assists and seven steals. 

Delaware State scored the first five points in the game before Aspajo got the Lions on the board with a jumper. A pair of free throws from Gillette got GCU within one, 8-7, midway through the quarter, but the Hornets outscored the Lions 10-3 the rest of the way and led 18-10 after one. Georgian Court was 7-18 from the floor in the second quarter and 2-6 from three, but still allowed 21 to the Hornets as they extended their lead to 11 at the half, 39-28.

Coming out of the half is where the Hornets pulled away. They scored the first eight points, going up 47-28. Precious Adediran hit a three to stop the run but the Lions were outscored 22-8 in the period. The Lions had a better shooting quarter in the third, going 6-15 and outscored the Hornets 14-10, but lost the game 71-50.

Delaware State shot 40% from the floor and hit seven three pointers. They were at the line 29 times making 20. Savannah Brooks scored a game-high 19 with three three pointers. Alexis Morange added 13 and Tyshonne Tollie collected 10 rebounds and nine points.

The Lions have one more exhibition on the schedule Monday, November 7 at Towson before the regular season kicks into gear Friday, November 11.
