DOVER, Del. (Dec. 10, 2022) - For the first time in school history, Georgian Court Men's Basketball took down a Division I opponent. The Lions defeated Delaware State Saturday afternoon 75-69 behind a 51-point second half performance. The win brings the Lions back over .500 at 5-4 on the season.
How it Happened
• Georgian Court was the better shooting team Saturday. They connected at a 52.3% clip and were 8-for-16 from three. Delaware State shot just 33.8% in their home gym, going 9-32 from three.
• The Lions were also able to pick up a bunch of points at the foul line. They were 21-29 while the Hornets were just 12-21.
• Despite losing the turnover battle 23-12, that didn't kill GCU as Delaware State scored just 22 points off 23 turnovers. The Lions meanwhile were able to score 14 off the 12 Hornet giveaways.
• Georgian Court held a 41-37 advantage rebounding the ball. The Hornets stayed in the game thanks in part to 16 offensive rebounds and outscored GCU 11-0 in second-chance points.
• Five Lions scored in double-figures and each team got 35 points from their bench. Â
•
Clint Wright, Jr. and
Jamaal Waters got the scoring started for GCU as they each hit jumpers to get GCU out to an early 4-0 lead. They maintained that lead and midway through the half, a
Justin Soranno three put the Lions up 10, 19-9.
• Delaware State came all the way backing scoring 10 straight to tie things at 19, but Wright, Jr. gave Georgian Court the lead right back with a three with just over four minutes to play.
• After a pair of
Jelani Jackson free throws with 2:40 left in half gave GCU a 24-22 lead, the Lions didn't score the rest of the period and the Hornets made a layup and then hit a three at the buzzer to take their first lead of the game, 27-24 at the break.
• Coming out of the half, the Lions were red hot and noone more so than Wright, Jr. He scored eight points, including hitting two three, the second of which gave the Lions the lead back, 34-31, at the 16:39 mark.
• GCU never gave the lead back after that. They connected for three straight three-pointers, two from
Jelani Jackson and one from
Titus Beard as part of an 18-0 run which saw them extend their lead from 37-35 to 55-35, capped off with a
Jalen Bates layup.
• With 8:21 left to play, the lead was still 20, but the Hornets started to inch their way closer. Helped out by a 4:31 scoreless drought from the Lions, Delaware State cut the lead in half, down to 10, 59-49, with 4:27 left to play.
•
Cameron Edmonds broke the drought knocking in a pair of free throws putting the Lions back up 12, but with just over two minutes to play, O'Koye Parker made it a six point game, 65-59, with a three.
• The Hornets had a chance to get even closer grabbing a steal, but Parker missed this three-point attempt and Delaware State had to start fouling.
•
Cameron Edmonds and
Jalen Bates combined to go 7-8 in the final minute from the foul line to hold off Delaware State and hang on for the 75-69 win.
It Was Over When...
• After
Jalen Bates made it an eight point lead with 28 seconds left to play,
Clint Wright, Jr. brought it back to double-digits making a layup with just 17 seconds left to play to put the finishing touches on the Lion win.
