Lakewood, N.J. - In a clash for the fourth-and-final playoff spot in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) south division, it would be Holy Family University that would maintain control in the postseason race as the visiting Tigers defeated Georgian Court, 62-53, in runaway fashion Wednesday night in the Wellness Center.
After trailing at the end of the first stanza by a 29-22 mark, the Lions fired off a 9-1 spurt to open the second half and take their first lead of the night with 14:51 to go (31-30). HFU would counterattack with a 9-2 spurt of its own to go back up by six (39-33) with just over 10 minutes left (10:14). GCU, continuing the scoreboard tug-of-war, answered to take its second one-point surplus of the half as a pair of
Jelani Jackson free throws capped a 13-6 push by the home team to make the score 46-45 (4:22).
The back-and-forth opening act concluded and the
Kharon Randolph (Philadelphia, Pa.) main event made its premiere at that point as the Holy Family junior seemingly put the Tigers (8-16, 3-11 CACC)Â on his back, beginning with a last-second, long-range three-pointer to put the visitors back up, 48-46, with 3:34 on the clock. Randolph would account for 13 of Holy Family's final 17 points as the road team outscored GCU, 17-7, over the last four+ minutes of play en route to the victory.
Randolph finished the night with 16 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Eric Esposito (Jr.-Langhorne, Pa.) topped the Tigers with 18 points while showcasing a variety of thunderous dunks throughout the contest.
Manny Toha (Fr.-Newark, N.J.) also eclipsed the double-digit threshold with his 13 points.
The aforementioned Jackson enjoyed a comeback performance of sorts as the junior guard poured in a team-high 14 points in 20 minutes off the Georgian Court bench.
Davon Floyd added 12 points and five swipes for the royal-and-gold while
Clint Wright, Jr. contributed 11 of his own in 37 total minutes.
Georgian Court (4-19, 3-12 CACC) now looks ahead to Tuesday evening (8:00 p.m.) when the Lions visit Wilmington University for yet another divisional contest with playoff implications. The Lions topped the Wildcats in the last "cat clash" when Wright, Jr's buzzer-beating three pushed GCU to a dramatic 73-72 win in the Wellness Center back on Jan. 24.Â
