Jefferson Men Escape With 74-67 Overtime Triumph in Gut-Wrenching Defeat for Lions

Lakewood, N.J. - Playing its final contest of the 2021-22 season on the home hardwood, Georgian Court University pushed divisional rival, Jefferson, to the limit as the visiting Rams eventually outlasted the Lions in overtime fashion, 74-67, Saturday in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) hoops action.

A back-and-forth contest from the opening tip, an Antonin Kemkeng (So.-Lille, France) layup with four seconds left in the first half provided the Rams a slim 30-29 advantage heading into intermission. A chaotic second stanza would then ensue as the foes would battle through three lead changes and no less than five stalemates over the final 20:00 of action.

After a Kemkeng layup with 4:14 remaining in regulation put Jefferson ahead by five (53-48), Georgian Court fired off a mighty 8-0 run (capped by a clutch Clint Wright, Jr.) three-pointer) to take a 56-53 advantage at the 0:26 mark. Not to be outdone, Deondre Bourne (Jr.-Brooklyn, N.Y.) countered with a clutch three-ball of his own, sinking the game-tying shot with nine ticks on the clock to force the extra session.

It would be all Jefferson in the overtime period as the Rams (18-5, 14-2 CACC) rode a 16-8 run to close out the contest and escape with the hard-fought victory.

Bourne topped all scorers with his 25 points, including four three-pointers. Kemking authored a double-double performance with his 21 points and 12 boards while Darius Kinnel (Jr.-Blackwood, N.J.) added 17 points of his own in the effort.

Jelani Jackson paced the Lions with 20 points in 36 minutes off the GCU bench. Wright drained four three-pointers on his way to 16 points in the contest. Davon Floyd, playing his final home game in a Georgian Court uniform, saved the best for last with a double-double consisting of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Olisa Ngonadi cleared the glass of 11 rebounds to go along with seven points.

GCU (4-21, 3-14 CACC) concludes the 2021-22 campaign this Wednesday evening with a visit to Chestnut Hill College (8pm).
