Men's Soccer Suffers Defeat in CACC Opener

SECAUCUS, N.J. (Sept. 10, 2022) - A late Alliance (formerly Nyack College) goal proved to be the difference in a 1-0 loss in Georgian Court's men's soccer conference opener. Alliance's second-half goal broke a 0-0 tie and GCU was unable to find the equalizer as they fall to 1-4 on the season. 

How it Happened
• Both teams finished in double-figure shots. The Lions connected for 10 and Alliance 12. GCU put three on net and Alliance five.
• Each team also had 10+ fouls. Alliance collected 14 and Georgian Court 12.
• Georgian Court had six opportunities on corner kicks while Alliance had three.
• Both teams were issued three yellow cards. Five of the six total cards were issued in the second half.
• Alliance put some pressure on early in the opening half. They got off four shots, one on net, and one corner kick in the first 14 minutes. The Lion defense held strong though and Sotirios Gkosdis made a save to keep the match scoreless.
• In the final 10 minutes, Mikey Mallon got off a pair of shots 50 seconds apart, but neither made its way to the net. 
• Alliance threatened in the closing minutes with two shots with less than two minutes remaining. Gkosdis made a stop and another shot sailed wide.
• Gkosdis was tested in the first 15 seconds of the second half, making a save to his right. Alliance also had a corner kick all in the first 90 seconds of half number two.
• With the intensity picking up, the teams combined for three yellow cards in less than five minutes, two coming against the Lions.
• Georgian Court saw a chance in the 64th minute with another corner kick, but couldn't get a shot off and less than a minute later were called for offsides.
• The Lions failure to capitalize gave Alliance a chance. In the 68th minute they broke the tie with a goal from Javier Plaza.
• Alliance was more than happy to let the clock run out after the goal. GCU managed just four shots after the goal, one on net. 
• The Lions had one last crack with a corner kick with 30 seconds remaining, but were unable to get a shot off and the clock hit zero ending the match 1-0.

Sotirios Gkosdis made four saves in net for the Lions. 
Oscar Jannesson led the Lions with three total shots, one on goal. 
Mikey Mallon got off two shots for GCU. 

For Alliance
• The lone goal for Alliance came from Javier Plaza. He finished with a game-high four shots and three on net.
• Marco Roessle was in net and stopped three GCU shots. 
• Miguel Andrade assisted on the goal.

News and Notes
• GCU has allowed zero or one goal in their last three matches.
• The Lions six corner kicks match a season-high.
• Georgian Court has had at least 10 shots in three of five matches this season.
Sotirios Gkosdis has allowed just two goals in three matches. 
Mikey Mallon is now up to a team high seven shots.
