Lions Lose Close One at Caldwell

CALDWELL, N.J. (Sept. 17, 2022) - In an evenly matched game, Georgian Court fell just short to the Caldwell Cougars 3-2, Saturday afternoon in Caldwell. 

How it Happened
• Both offenses were evenly matched with 15 total shots for each, seven in the first half and eight in the second.
• Georgian Court managed to put one more shot on net, 9-8.
• GCU committed eight fouls in each half and Caldwell 12 in each.
• The only area where Caldwell held a distinct advantage was in corner kicks, 12-1.
• Those corner kicks started early for Caldwell as they got their first in the first minute of the match and totaled four in the first six minutes. One of those corners led to a scoring a chance, but Nickolas Fiallos' header hit the crossbar and stayed out of the net.
• That allowed GCU to take the early lead. A ball deflected off Caldwell keeper Dylan Valencia and found Mathias Madersbacher who slammed it home for a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute.
Mikey Mallon looked to make it 2-0 getting off a pair of shots shortly after the Madersbacher goal, but one sailed wide and Valencia made the stop on the other.
• The action calmed down a bit until the 33rd minute. Caldwell evened up the match getting a goal from Andre Vieira. Joel Genao served a cross left to right and Vieira beat GCU keeper Sotirios Gkosdis.
• Seven minutes later, in the 40th minute, Caldwell took the lead. Following a GCU foul, Maicol Diaz sent the free kick from the top of the box into the net giving Caldwell their first lead, 2-1. The half ended at 2-1 without another shot.
• Caldwell had a couple of chances to extend the lead early in the second half. In the 50th minute, they had three straight corner kick opportunities, but only got off one shot, which was blocked in front of the net.
Mikey Mallon who came close in the first half, found the equalizer in the second. His shot from the top of the box from Noah Hamouda tied the match at two.
• GCU then had a chance to reclaim the lead. In the 71st minute, David Tuschmann got a shot off which was saved by led to the Lions lone corner kick of the afternoon. Mallon's kick found Oscar Jannesson who got a head on it, but Valencia kept it out of the net and kept the match tied at two.
• Caldwell finally broke the tie in the 82nd minute. A cross from Vieira found Israel Dos Santos who beat Gkosdis for a 3-2 Cougar lead.
• Play intensified as five yellow cards were issued following the Dos Santos goal, three on GCU.
• Tuschmann had another shot go wide in the 88th minute and with just 26 seconds to play, Logan Romero put one on net, but it was swallowed up by Valencia to preserve the Cougar win.

Mathias Madersbacher put two shots on goal and scored once.
Noah Hamouda picked up an assist.
David Tuschmann added two shots in 22 minutes.
Sotirios Gkosdis made five stops in net.

• Andre Vieira had a goal and an assist.
• Israel Dos Santos scored once with two shots on net.
• Maicol Diaz also put two shots on goal and scored once.
• Joel Genao played all 90 minutes and had an assist.
• Dylan Valencia made seven saves.

News and Notes
Mathias Madersbacher has four points in his last two matches.
Mikey Mallon's goal was the first of his career.
• GCU has seven goals scored in their last two matches after starting the year with four goals in their first five.
• Of GCU's 15 shots, nine were on net for a shot-on-goal percentage of 60%, their highest in a match this season.
• Opposing goaltenders have been forced to make seven saves each of the last two matches.
