LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Sept. 24, 2022) - On an afternoon packed with youth soccer teams, the capacity crowd was treated to an entertaining match between Georgian Court and Felician men's soccer. Georgian Court took an early first half lead, but couldn't hang on, as a Golden Falcon goal in the 86th minute evened the match and brought it to the 1-1 final.
How it Happened
• It was a low-scoring, physical match that featured 14 yellow cards and 34 total fouls called.Â
• Felician had the advantage offensively with 18 shots, eight on net, to the Lions six total shots, four coming on goal.
• The Golden Falcons were also able to generate eight corner kicks to the Lions three.
• Felician was peppering the net to start the half. Lion goalkeeper
Sotirios Gkosdis made five saves in the first 20 minutes.
• Shots were tough to come by for GCU, but in the 31st minute they made one count.
Cherif Tammar sprung
Jay Abraham with an outlet pass down the middle of the field. He went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and beat him shooting right to left for the 1-0 lead.
• The Golden Falcons nearly tied the match just five minutes later, but Anthony Medina hit the crossbar and the ball stayed out of the net.
• Gkosdis was forced to make another save in the 39th minute and that was the final shot of the half as GCU led 1-0 at the break.
• The intensity really picked up in the second half. All 14 cards were issued in the latter 45 starting with one on each side in the 51st minute.
• The Lions had a chance to get ahead 2-0 as
Ryan Lee got a shot on net after a GCU corner kick, but Felician goalie Uche Santschi made the save.
• As the physicality picked up, the fewer shots were attempted. After a 16 shot first half, there was just half that, eight in the second stanza.
• With less than five minutes remaining, the Golden Falcons took advantage of a GCU foul in the defensive end. Riccardo Benini's free kick was placed on net where Danny Bzura got just enough of a head on it to get it up over Gkosdis and into the net to tie the match.
