PHILADELPHIA (Sept. 27, 2022) - Georgian Court put their three-match winning streak on the line against the top team in the CACC South Division. The Lions struggled to get going offensively and fell to the Tigers 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-21). Georgian Court is now 6-9 overall and 2-3 in their first five conference matches.
How it Happened
• Holy Family nearly doubled the Lions in points scored, 57-30. They put down 38 kills to the Lions 21.
• GCU hit just .022 while the Tigers were at .235.
• Holy Family scored 11 points on service aces and eight on blocks. GCU landed seven aces and put back just two blocks.
• The Lions scored three of the first four points in set one getting kills from Ava Venneri and Emma Gildea for an early 3-1 lead. GCU pushed that lead to 8-5 following a Venneri service ace. Holy Family took over from there going on a 7-1 run for a 12-9 lead forcing a Lion timeout.
• Coming out of the break, the Lions responded, tying the set at 15 on another service ace, this time from Jana Borkovic. Still tied at 17, Holy Family got back-to-back points and never trailed again. They closed the set on an 8-3 run for a 25-20 win.
• The Tigers carried that momentum into set two. They raced out to a 10-3 lead and Georgian Court needed a timeout. The Tigers didn't slow down scoring eight of the next nine points after the timeout for their largest lead, 18-4. Georgian Court added some points near the end, but it was too little, too late as the Tigers cruised to a 2-0 lead behind a 25-13 set two win.
• Set three was close at the start. Leading by one, 7-6, Holy Family got some separation scoring seven of 10 points for a 14-9 advantage. A service error got the sideout they needed, but they gave it right back with a service error of their own.
• After the error, the Tigers scored four straight for their largest lead, 19-10. HFU got to match point, 24-15, but again a service error was a sideout for the Lions.
• Jessica Sprankle served up a pair of aces and Nylene Mateo landed two kills and suddenly it was just a three point lead, 24-21. Following the timeout though, Holy Family ended things with a kill and a 3-0 sweep.
