LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Sept. 28, 2022) – Playing against a ranked opponent, Georgian Court Women's Soccer played perhaps their finest match of the season. The Lions got ahead of Molloy University early, but still trailed by a goal at the half. It looked like the 2-1 score might hold up, but GCU found the equalizer with less than 90 seconds to play. The draw is the Lions fifth of the season and they stand at 1-4-5 overall.
How it Happened
• Molloy doubled up Georgian Court in total shots, 22-11, and shots on goal, 12-6.
• Georgian Court had more chances off corner kicks, 5-3.
• It was a cleanly played game where neither team was issued a yellow card. Molloy was called for six fouls and GCU just two.
• The two teams came out sheepishly to start. Molloy fired a shot wide in the fourth minute, but the first attempt on net finally came in the 10
th.
Bridgette King got one towards Shannon Kilian who made the stop.
• Molloy controlled possession after and ripped three consecutive shots, all stopped by
Alyssa Dias.
• In transition in the 17
th minute, King found a streaking
Krystal Hund to her left who was all by herself. Hund with the left foot shot right and past the keeper for a 1-0 GCU lead.
• The lead was short-lived however. About 90 seconds later a corner kick from Sarah Tappeto sailed towards the net and Lindsey McCarthy got a head on it and tapped it off the crossbar and into the net.
• Not long after, an errant Molloy pass ended up in a fortunate place. The missed pass was dropped into an unoccupied spot and Morgan Camarda raced to get possession, took a dribble and put one off her left foot and into the net for a 2-1 lead.
• Georgian Court's best opportunity to tie came with nine minutes to play in the half.
Abby Kennelly got a header off a corner kick from
Izzy Hernandez. Shannon Kilian was in the right place to make the stop though and GCU trailed 2-1 after 45 minutes.
• Starting the second half, Molloy was sending everything towards the net. Four shots in the first seven minutes, but none made it on net.
• Molloy kept the pressure up, getting three more shots, this time all on goal, in a two minute span, but
Carley Polchak, who entered the match to start the half, made three saves.
• In the middle of the half, GCU had three consecutive corner kick chances, but weren't able to make anything happen from them.
• GCU's first shot in the second half didn't come until the 75
th minute. Another header by Kennelly that Kilian stopped.
• With the clock running down towards the end of the match, Molloy was called for three consecutive fouls to keep possession with Georgian Court. A throw-in with 90 seconds left from
Sophia Ridolfo found King who made a cross-field pass to Hund who one-timed it out of the air and passed the keeper tying the match at two.
• There were no more scoring opportunities in the final 86 seconds as the horn sounded ending the match in a 2-2 draw.
