LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Jan. 14, 2023) - Georgian Court Lions Basketball will have to wait another day to get win number 10 on the season. Their two-game winning streak was halted by Caldwell Saturday afternoon, 84-72, as the Lions were down from the start. They fall to 9-7 on the season and 5-2 in the CACC.
How it Happened
• Caldwell's three-point shooting was better than the Lions on this day. They were 10-24 while GCU was just 5-22 and that was enough to be the difference on the final score.
• The Cougars shot 47% overall and GCU was just a hair below 40% at 39.7%.Â
• Caldwell also held the edge rebounding the ball, 41-30 and blocked three GCU shots.
• Kirk Parsons got the scoring started for Caldwell with a bucket at 19:13 and Caldwell led end-to-end.Â
• A 7-0 run gave the Cougars their first double-digit lead, 16-6, following a Darnell Evans and-one. They kept their foot on the gas and another Evans layup gave them their largest lead of the half, 23-10.Â
•
Jamaal Waters splashed a dunk home, but the Lions weren't able to dig too much into that Cougar lead. At the half it was a 10-point game, 39-29 Caldwell.Â
• The action wasn't over at the final whistle of the half though. After saw back-and-forth jawing as the teams were heading to the locker room,
Jalen Bates was issued a technical foul. That was his third foul and also meant Caldwell would start the half at the free throw line. That 10-point halftime lead turned to 12 before the ball was even inbounded to start the second half.
• With 13:08 remaining, Melvin Evans made it an 18-point game at the free throw line to give the Cougars their largest lead of the game, 58-40, and things weren't looking good for the Lions.Â
• GCU didn't quit though. They slowly climbed their way in and with six minutes left it was a four-point game, 70-66, thanks to a 26-12 Lion run. They leaned heavily on Waters who scored 17 of the 26 and GCU caused four Caldwell turnovers.
• That was as close as the Lions got though as they cooled off scoring just six more points in the final 5:38, going 3-11 and 0-4 from three. Caldwell put the game away at the free throw line where they sunk 9-10 and came out with an 84-72 win.
It Was Over When...
• Bates kept it a two-possession game, 75-70 following a floater with 1:38 left. But Caldwell was money at the foul line going 7-8 in the final 91 seconds to hold off the Lions.
