Lions Comeback Bid Falls Empty vs. Chestnut Hill

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Jan. 17, 2023) - Georgian Court never led in their 75-64 loss to Chestnut Hill, but the game remained close and competitive throughout. The Lions trailed by just three at the half, and brought it back to within one late in the second, but couldn't overcome the Griffins as they fall to 9-8 on the season and 5-3 in the CACC.

How it Happened
• Chestnut Hill did a lot of damage at the free throw line. There weren't many shots falling as CHC was 28-68 overall and 4-18 from three, but they made 15-17 free throws which allowed them to hold off the Lion comeback.
• Georgian Court struggled from the floor as well shooting 26-70 and 6-23 from behind the arc. They made 6-of-9 at the line.
• In a game that featured 87 rebounds, Chestnut Hill grabbed 47 and Georgian Court 40. While shots weren't falling from outside, the Griffins outscored the Lions 42-30 in the paint.
• The Lions spotted the Griffins six at the start and didn't score until the 15:45 mark of the first half. Chestnut Hill took their largest lead of the half, 24-17, with 5:28 left, but GCU closed the frame on a 10-6 run the rest of the half to get back to within three at the break, 30-27. Hassan Jackson scored four and the Lions forced two CHC turnovers during the stretch.
• GCU again got off to a slow start to begin the second half. Chestnut Hill scored the first nine going 4-4 from the floor and opened up a 39-27 lead.
• The Lions kept chipping away. A three from Cameron Edmonds and a Jamaal Waters layup made it a five-point game. However Chestnut Hill had a response nearly each time the Lions cut into the lead.
• With 10:55 left to play, Chestnut Hill's Noah Charles sank a three giving them an 11-point lead, 52-41. With under 10 remaining, GCU used a 7-0 run with baskets from Edmonds, Waters and Clint Wright, Jr. to close the gap back down to three, 57-54, for the first time since the half.
• The Lions never quit and back-to-back buckets from Jalen Bates brought the lead all the way down to one, 61-60, with 2:17 left to play.
• Offensive rebounds doomed the Lions though. Leading by one, the Griffins secured an offensive board and finished with a layup. Then following a Lion miss, CHC was at the line for a one-and-one. Amir Warrick missed the front end, but Trevonn Pitts grabbed the offense board and was put back on the line where he sunk two as the lead climbed back to two possessions, 65-60, with 1:38 left.
• Georgian Court never got any closer as the Griffins put the game away at the foul line going 8-8 in the final 39 seconds.

 It Was Over When...
• After Georgian Court got to within one with just over two minutes left to play, Chestnut Hill scored the next 10 straight points and put the game away at the foul line where they were 8-8 in the closing minute.
