LAKEWOOD, NJ (Oct. 14, 2023) - In a game that was played mostly in moderate rainfall, the Lions were the ones who fell, 2-1, on a late Caldwell goal. All three goals were scored in the second half with the game-winner in the 85th minute for the Cougars. The loss drops the Lions to 4-6-2 this season, 3-3-1 in the CACC.
How it Happened
• Caldwell led in possession time 54%-46%.Â
• The match featured plenty of shots, 39 in total, but just 13 were on net.Â
• The Lions led in shots 20-19 but Caldwell was up 7-6 in shots on goal.
• The Cougars also led in corner kicks by a wide disparity, 9-2.
• Fouls saw Caldwell whistled for 11 and the Lions nine while the Cougars were booked with two yellow cards and Georgian Court one.
• The first half saw both teams testing the goaltenders early, getting shots on net.
• The best scoring opportunity came in the 27th minute when
Jack Pollintine-Smith took a header from a cross pass on an empty right side of the net, but hit the post and stayed out.
• Caldwell got off consecutive shots in the 30th minute, but the Lion defense held strong to keep the game scoreless.
• The Cougars had a barrage of free kick attempts late in the half, but were unable to do anything with them and after 45 minutes, the match was still without a goal.
• The start of the second half was playing out much like the first, with lots of shots, but no dangerous scoring opportunities.
• That changed in the 65th minute. Israel Dos Santos Neto carried the ball into the box and was able to flick the ball past the defender and the goalkeeper into the right side for a 1-0 Cougar lead.
• Six minutes later, it was the Lions who were able to get on the board.
Alessandro Cavallini passed the ball into the box where
Gijs Van Eif had a step on his man and redirected the ball into the net to tie the match.
• Following the Lions goal, Caldwell was able to build more offensive pressure.
• They took the lead back in the 85th minute getting a fortunate bounce. A cross played into the box was kicked by a Lion defender, but went right to the foot of Gisle Myrle who's shot from the top of the box went past a diving Krissler and into the upper corner for a goal.
• The last five minutes were a mad dash to the end. The Lions worked just their second corner kick of the match with less than a minute remaining. Nothing came of it though and the Cougars escaped with a 2-1 win.
