Lions Serve Holy Family a Pumpkin on Halloween

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Oct. 31, 2023) - Georgian Court needed a big win Tuesday night in Philadelphia and were scary good in their 3-0 sweep of Holy Family. On Halloween night, there was nothing but treats for the Lions who won by scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-8. The win pulls the Lions even with Holy Family in the CACC standings at 7-5 and 13-10 overall.

How it Happened
• Georgian Court held the Tigers to hitting below .100 at 0.47 while hitting .265 themselves.
• GCU scored 36 kills with just 10 attack errors. The Tigers hit 22 attack errors and 27 kills.
• Service reception, which had been quite spooky for the Lions of late was near perfect. Holy Family scored just one service ace while the Lions landed six.
• On defense, GCU totaled six blocks and 44 digs. Holy Family put back four blocks with 47 digs.
Set One
• The start of the set saw both teams going back and forth. Neither team was able to get more than a one-point lead until GCU pulled ahead 9-7.
• From there, the Lions never trailed again. They continued to push their lead three, 14-11 and the Tigers needed a timeout.
• Georgian Court continued to pad their lead, going up 19-14 as the Tigers needed another break.
• Holy Family fought back, getting to within two, 22-20. Georgian Court though scored the final three points and a bad HFU set gave the Lions a 1-0 match lead.
Set 2
• With the set tied at four, Georgian Court scored four straight points with two kills, a block and a Martina Croce service ace to take a 7-3 lead.
• The Lions never trailed the rest of the way. Holy Family was able to close to within two at 13-11, but never got any closer.
• Leading 19-16, the Lions finished the set scoring six of the final eight points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set 3
• Set three was all Lions. Holy Family never had a chance.
• GCU got off to a 5-0 lead, helped out by two service aces from Dayna Diaz and Holy Family needed a timeout.
• The Lions led 6-0 before Holy Family even scored a point.
• GCU went on another big run and brought their lead to 12, 14-2.
• Georgian Court scored five of their final six points on Holy Family attack errors and held the Tigers below 10 in a 25-8 win.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Giorgia Cappelletti was all over the court for the Lions. She scored 12 kills with 15 digs.
• Martina Croce was a kill shy of double-figures with nine.
• Chelsea Ross had six kills and hit .455 with three blocks.
• Dayna Diaz passed out 25 assists with nine digs and two service aces.

For the Tigers
• Shelby Kinzer led Holy Family with 11 kills.
• Maeve Boyland picked up 15 digs.
• Morgan Steck passed out 23 assists with eight digs.

News and Notes
• Georgian Court snapped a six-match losing streak to Holy Family.
• Alexa Houston scored her 100th kill with the Lions.
• Giorgia Cappelletti reached 300 points this season.
• Last time Georgian Court and Holy Family met, the Tigers landed 17 service aces. Tonight, just one in the third set when already trailing 18-6.

• Georgian Court will remain on the road this weekend. They'll be in New York to take on Dominican Saturday, November 4 at 12 p.m.
