Griffins Steal Win Over Lions Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Oct. 5, 2023) - Georgian Court was two points away from a four-set match win against Chestnut Hill, but the Griffins stormed back to steal the fourth set and went on to win in five, 25-22, 17-25, 25-19, 23-25, 8-15. The loss drops the Lions to 7-8 this season and 2-4 in the CACC.

How it Happened
• Chestnut Hill scored more kills, 61-54. Hitting percentage was close with the Lions hitting .247 for the match and CHC .239.
• Defensive numbers were also close. GCU led in digs 65-64 but the Griffins led in kills 7-5.
• Chestnut Hill was able to land 15 service aces while the Lions hit just six. GCU also hit 10 service errors and scored 13 points on Griffin service errors.
Set 1
• The two teams were trading points at the start of the set with things tied at eight early on.
• Chestnut Hill went on a run though, scoring six of the next seven to take their largest lead, 14-9.
• The Lions rallied with five straight points to tie and took the lead, 16-15 on a kill from Amiyah Woods.
• GCU pushed their lead to four, 20-16, but the Griffins were able to get back to within one on several occasions.
• The Lions didn't break though and an attack error gave GCU a 25-22 set one win.
Set 2
• Again, the set started out with the teams going back-and-forth.
• Tied at six, the Griffins scored nine straight to take a 15-9 lead.
• The Lions were never able to overcome that CHC run and the Griffins tied the match with a 25-17 win.
• GCU hit nine attack errors in the frame.
Set 3 
• Georgian Court led from the get-go and never looked back.
• After getting ahead 4-1, the Lions were able to push their lead to 17-9.
• Chestnut Hill got back to within four, 21-17, but the Lions ended the set with a Nylene Mateo kill taking a 2-1 match lead, 25-19.
Set 4
• Georgian Court again took an early lead in the fourth set, 6-2.
• Chestnut Hill fought back to tie at 10-all.
• Still tied at 13, Georgian Court went on a 7-4, going up 17-14.
• GCU still led by three, 23-20 when the Griffons stormed back. They scored the final five points in the set to steal set four 25-23 and tie the match at two.
Set 5
• Chestnut Hill kept that momentum going in the fifth set. They immediately got on top 3-1 and only extended their lead.
• They doubled up the Lions 10-5 and went on to win 15-8.
• The Griffins hit .643 in the set with nine kills and no attack errors. 

Lion Stat Leaders
• Nylene Mateo led the Lions with 14 kills. She also picked up 13 digs.
• Giorgia Cappelletti also had a double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs.
• Amiyah Woods hit .500 with 11 kills and just one attack error.
• Martina Croce landed 10 kills with six digs.
• Iciar Zayas picked up 42 assists with a kill and two blocks.
• Jessica Sprankle led the defense with 17 digs.

For the Griffins
• Erika Dubosky had a game-high 19 kills and was a dig shy of a double-double.
• Rachel Mace picked up 17 kills and 11 digs.
• Cha'Kya Johnson chipped in 13 kills.
• Mia Caporellie passed out 47 assists.
• Natalie Albin led the team with 15 digs.

News and Notes
• Jessica Sprankle entered the GCU all-time top-10 in digs.
• The Lions 54 kills and 65 digs are their most in a conference match this season. 
• All-time GCU is 26-6 against the Griffins, but CHC has won the last three matches.
• This is the first five-set conference match for GCU this season.

• Georgian Court returns home Saturday, Oct. 7 as they continue CACC play. They host Caldwell with first serve starting at 12 p.m.
