Lions Basketball Season Comes To An End at Bloomfield

BLOOMFIELD, NJ (Feb. 28, 2023) - Georgian Court ran into a buzzsaw Tuesday evening in round one of the CACC Tournament. The Lions drew the No. 2 seed in the North Bloomfield, who finished the regular season winning six straight. The red-hot Bears stayed that way as they knocked the Lions out of the postseason with a 91-74 win. GCU finishes the season at 12-16 overall after going 8-9 in the CACC.

How it Happened
• Bloomfield finished the game shooting 51.5% from the floor and were 13-39 from three.
• Georgian Court was about 40% for the game at 40.3% while hitting 31.3% from downtown.
• Rebounding numbers were close with the Bears holding a 41-39 edge. It was GCU though on top 15-11 on the offensive glass and 19-11 in second-chance points.
• GCU committed 15 turnovers and 18 fouls. The Bears had one less in each, 14 turnovers and 17 fouls.
• Bloomfield came out firing shooting 67.7% overall in the first half and 9-15 from behind the arc.
• Georgian Court did all they could as they scored 39 points in the opening 20 minutes.
• The Lions led early 5-2 after a Jelani Jackson three, 80 seconds into the game.
• After some back-and-forth, Andreas VonFricke gave GCU an 18-16 lead with a three midway into the half.
• With the Lions trailing by one, 22-32, Bloomfield scored nine straight taking their largest lead, 32-22.
• Georgian Court answered scoring six straight of their own, but the Bears went on another scoring stretch, this time scoring 10 straight.
• Bloomfield put up 57 in the opening half and after 20 minutes led by 18, 57-39.
• Georgian Court outscored the Bears in the second half, but only by one.
• An 11-2 Lions run brought GCU to their closest point of the half, down 16, 75-59. Bloomfield though responded scoring seven straight to put the game away.
• The teams traded baskets at the end but the Lions never posed a threat to the Bear lead as the game ended 91-74.

It Was Over When...
• Georgian Court was threatening to make a comeback bid with an 11-2 run to bring the lead from 25 to 16. The Bears squashed that though with a 7-0 run of their own, capped off by a Lion turnover that led to a fast-break dunk on the other end.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Clint Wright, Jr. finished with a team-high 19 points. He was 8-15 overall and 3-7 from three.
• Jelani Jackson was 4-6 from deep and scored 16 points.
• Titus Beard added 13 points going 5-12 overall.
• Andreas VonFricke and Jalen Bates each scored six off the bench.
• Jamaal Waters grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and scored five points.

For the Bears
• Wesley Robinson was 13-17 scoring a game-high 32 points with seven rebounds.
• Andreas Fulgencio was 4-6 from three with eight rebounds and five assists.
• Deavion Ellis added 18 points with seven boards and five assists.
• Tyrek Battle-Holley dished out seven assists while scoring 12 points.

News and Notes
• Clint Wright, Jr. made his 300th career field goal, the sixth Lion to ever do that
• Jelani Jackson become the sixth Lion to ever make 70 three-pointers in a career.
• Shane Williams surpassed 2,000 career minutes played.
• Georgian Court is now 0-2 all-time in the CACC postseason and 0-11 against Bloomsfield.
