Lions Softball Earns Sweep on Sunny Day in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. (April 16, 2023) - Georgian Court made sure to bring their bats with them to Philadelphia. They collected 12 hits in each game sweeping Jefferson 9-0 and 7-5. GCU has won five straight and are 26-14 and 10-4 in the CACC. 

Game 1 - Georgian Court 9, Jefferson 0 - 6 innings
How it Happened

• Georgian Court scored early and late in the game one win.
• The Lions sprayed the ball over the field collecting 12 hits with seven going for extra bases.
Maddie Rabe allowed just two singles and didn't walk a batter. 
• GCU put up a three-spot in the very first innings. Taylor Lipkins and Kaitlyn Stufft each tripled with Lipkins scoring the games first run.
• One batter later, Savannah Simons made it 3-0 parking one for her fifth home run of the year. 
• The game stayed that way for a long time. There was no scoring four the next four innings.
• Things changed in a hurry in the sixth inning. In a span of just seven pitches, Georgian Court scored six runs on four extra-base hits. 
• It started when pinch hitter Alyssa Herrera drove in pinch runner Camille Dunham with a double. One pitch later, Jadalynn Rodriguez tripled in Herrera.
• The very next pitch, Lipkins nearly had her second triple of the game, but settled for a double as Rodriguez trotted home.
Adriana Mungo needed three pitches to put the ball in play. her dropped fly ball in the outfield allowed Lipkins to score.
• Stufft though needed just one pitch to crank a two-run shot to left and in the blink of an eye, the Lions led 9-0.
• Rabe pitched a 1-2-3 ninth and the Lions took game one, 9-0.

Lions Stat Leaders
Kaitlyn Stufft continued her tear of late going 3-4 with a home run and three RBI. She finished a double shy of the cycle.
Taylor Lipkins created havoc going 2-4 with a triple, stolen base, two runs scored and an RBI.
Jadalynn Rodriguez was 2-3 with a triple.
Taylor Barraza finished 2-3 as well.
Savannah Simons was 1-4 with a two-run homer.
Alyssa Herrera entered as a pinch hitter and doubled to drive in a run and scored.
Maddie Rabe needed just 65 pitches to complete her shutout. She went all six innings allowing just two hits with a strikeout.

For the Rams
• Gianna DeLorenzo gave up nine runs (eight earned) over six innings with three strikeouts.
• Winnai Hoyt was 1-3.
• Cayla Kalani finished 1-2. 

Game 2 - Georgian Court 7, Jefferson 4
How it Happened

• For the second straight game GCU collected 12 hits, though this time just three were for extra bases.
• Jefferson found their stroke knocking 11 hits, though nine of those were singles.
• The Lions took advantage of some poor Ram defense that committed three errors and allowed an unearned run to score.
• Both teams left seven runners on base. 
• Once again, Georgian Court got rolling early. They scored twice in the opening inning. The game started with Taylor Lipkins reaching on a dropped pop up. She moved to third after an errant throw from the catcher and scored on Adriana Mungo's since to right.
• An RBI single from Savannah Simons made it 2-0.
Kaitlyn Stufft added a run in the third with an RBI double down the left field line to score Mungo.
Janelle Blaszka was rolling through four but ran into trouble in the fifth. Jefferson scored four times to take a 4-3 lead. With two outs and two on, a two-run double gave the Rams their first lead.
• The lead was short lived though. As in only two batters long. Simons led off the sixth with a single and Jayda Jones gave the Lions the lead right back with a two-run blast to left center.
• GCU wasn't done in the sixth. Brittany Gable walked and scored on Jadalynn Rodriguez's RBI single to right.
• The Lions tacked on in the seventh with Jones again singling home pinch-runner Camille Dunham following Stufft's second double of the game. 
• The tack-on runs proved important as Jefferson scored a run on three hits in the home half of the seventh. Jackie Cherry escaped the inning with a comebacker leaving the tying-run on base.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Kaitlyn Stuff was 3-4 with two doubles and an RBI.
Adriana Mungo went 2-4 with two runs scored
Jayda Jones homered and drove in three runs.
Savannah Simons collected two more hits with a run and an RBI.
Janelle Blaszka allowed a run on four hits in four innings.
Sam Hildebrant got the win with an inning of work.
Jackie Cherry allowed a run on three hits to earn the save.

For the Rams
• Angelina Sherba started and allowed seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits with six strikeouts.
• Winnai Hoyt had a 3-4 day with two runs and an RBI.
• Ellie Egher was also 3-4 and drove in three.
• Sam Gomez picked up two hits.
• Ali Murphy tripled and scored while also driving in a run. 

News and Notes
• Game one was finished in a brisk one hour and 20 minutes.
Kaitlyn Stufft extended her hitting streak to 15 games. She was 3-4 in both ends of today's doubleheader. 
• For the second straight game, Rabe didn't walk a batter. That's the first time she hasn't issued any free passes in back-to-back games the season. 
Jadalynn Rodriguez played in her 100th career game. 
• The sweep ensures the Lions will finish the regular season with a winning record. 
• The Lions have scored at least seven runs in four straight games. It's the second time they've done that this season. They haven't scored seven+ in five straight since 2021 when they did so in seven straight games.
• Georgian Court has collected exactly 12 hits in three straight games. That is a lucky number for the Lions. They have 12 hits now in five games this season, tied for the most games with an exact number of hits. They also have eight hits in five games this season. 
• The 12 hits in three games is the first time they've had the same number of hits in three straight games since last season when they accomplished it in four straight. The number of hits the Lions collected in each of those four games? Twelve. They had 12 hits in 10 different games last year. 

Up Next
• Georgian Court will stay on the road and head to Goldey-Beacom this Tuesday, April 18 for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
