Lions Drop Three-Set Match at Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (Sept. 11, 2023) - Georgian Court Volleyball could not overcome the Kutztown Golden Bears Monday night in a 3-0 sweep. The Golden Bears won by set scores of 25-19, 25-16, 25-17, as GCU falls to 3-3 on the season.

How it Happened
• Kutztown hit .309 for the match with 43 total kills and just 13 errors. Georgian Court landed 26 kills, hitting .105.
• Most of the points in the match came from kills. Kutztown led just 10-5 on service aces and 8-5 on blocks.
• Defensively, the Golden Bears picked up 40 digs and the Lions 36. 
Set 1
• Kutztown never trailed in the opening frame and after getting ahead 3-2, led the rest of the way.
• The Golden Bears extended their lead to 7-3 and GCU called an early timeout. The Golden Bears had five kills on seven attempts which led to the four-point advantage.
• Kutztown continued to extend their lead, bringing it to a set-high nine, 16-7. 
• Georgian Court got it back down to as close as five, but the Golden Knights were too much in set one, hitting .351 with 17 kills. Sadie Doss landed eight kills and Kutztown took game one, 25-19.
Set 2
• The second set started out much more closely contested than the first. 
• Once again, Kutztown took a 4-2 lead, but after that, GCU scored five straight for a 7-4 edge and forced a Golden Knights timeout.
• The Golden Knights scored three straight of their own to tie, but the Lions respond with their own 3-0 run for a 12-9 lead.
• That's when things went south for the Lions. Kutztown scored 10 straight points and lead 19-12. They were able to cruise from there, 25-16 for a 2-0 match lead.
Set 3
• The two teams traded points for the first five with neither getting more than a one-point lead.
• Kutztown broke that streak by scoring two straight for a 7-5 lead. That started a 7-1 run for the Golden Bears who got on top 12-6 as the Lions called timeout.
• The Golden Bears continued their run scoring the next three and the rest of the set was never in doubt as they won the set and the match, 25-17.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Nylene Mateo put down eight kills and picked up six digs.
• Giorgia Cappelletti scored seven kills.
• Chelsea Ross had two kills and four blocks.
• Iciar Zayas passed out 22 assists and was a dig shy of a double-double.
• Carmen Rivera grabbed seven digs.

For the Golden Bears
• Sadie Doss his .500 with 19 kills on 32 attempts. She also added five digs.
• Gabriela Fialova scored 17 kills on her own with six digs.
• Julia Post hit seven blocks and one kill.
• Cat Farole passed out 21 assists.

News and Notes
• These two teams met last season in Lakewood with the Lions sweeping the match. Each set was determined by just two points.
• Jessica Sprankle recorded her 700th career dig.
• The Lions hit just two service errors in the entire match. 
• Doss and Fialova combined for 36 of the Golden Bears 43 kills on the night.

• Georgian Court begins conference play late this week. They host Goldey-Beacom Wednesday, Sept. 13 at the GCU Wellness Center beginning at 6 p.m.
