Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lions Score Three, But Play to Draw With Staten Island

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Sept. 13, 2023) - Georgian Court Women's Soccer saw their offense breakout in a three goal effort against The College of Staten Island Wednesday afternoon. However, the Dolphins matched them, scoring twice in the second half as the two teams played to a 3-3 draw. It's the first points of the season for GCU who are now 0-3-1.

How it Happened
• Georgian Court led in overall possession time, 55%-45%, but it was the College of Staten Island who did more with their time.
• The Dolphins outshot the Lions 15-12 and had a shots-on-goal advantage of 11-7.
• Georgian Court had three times as many corner kicks, 6-2, but were unable to take advantage of the set-piece opportunities.
• Fouls played a part in the game with GCU called for 11, plus four yellow cards. CSI was tagged with just eight fouls.
• Early in the first half, Georgian Court scored their first official goal of the season. Off a throw in, Jessica Ford found Aliya Canfield at the top of the box. She unloaded one off the cross bar which bounced straight downward and into the net for a 1-0 lead.
• The lead was short lived though as less than 10 minutes later, CSI tied things up. Arielle Uy sent a beautiful pass into the box where Nadia Evola headed it past the Lions keeper who came high out of the goal.
• The one goal was no issue for Georgian Court who answered with two more in the first half. Ashley Merizalde intercepted a pass in the offensive zone and was streaking down the left side of the field. She found Abby Kennelly wide open in front of the net and Kennelly was able to one-time it past the Staten Island netminder for a 2-1 lead.
• That's how things stayed until the final 90 seconds of the half. Bridgette King's through pass connect with Chiamaka Wokocha at midfield. She was by herself but ran through a Dolphin defender, dribbled around the goal keeper and scored her first collegiate goal into a wide open net.
• Starting in the second half, Staten Island was able to get a goal closer 10 minutes into the half. The Dolphins had a free kick from 30 yards out. Georgian Court's goalkeeper Delanie Wilkinson got a hand on it, but couldn't corral it as the ball bounced around in the box. A blocked shot went directly to the feet of the Dolphins Arielle Uy who tucked one up high for the 'Fins second goal.
• Staten Island found the equalizer again from Uy. After a turnover at midfield, Uy had the ball by herself against two Georgian Court defenders and the goalkeeper. A touch in the box fell between the two Lion defenders and when neither went for it, Uy was there to steal it back and score to tie the match.
• Georgian Court looked like they might be able to come up with the game-winner late in the match. They ripped off four shots in the final four minutes, but were unable to hit the back of the net.
• With less than five minutes to play, a free kick was played to Wokocha who was able to get a head on it and set it towards the goal, but Dolphins goalkeeper Brianna Dore got enough on it to punch it harmlessly over the crossbar.

• Three different Lions scored goals. Chiamaka Wokocha had a team-high three shots with two on net and one goal.
