WILMINGTON, De. (Sept. 20, 2023) - For the first time in seven years, a Georgian Court player hung a hat trick on the scoreboard.
Mathias Madersbacher netted three goals Wednesday afternoon at Goldey-Beacom, the second Lion to ever tally three goals in a game. Madersbacher was matched though by the Lightning in a 3-3 draw as the Lions moved to 1-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the CACC.
How it Happened
• Opportunities were even in the 3-3 match. GCU led in shots 15-11 and shots on goal 7-5.
• Georgian Court did have a handful of chance called back with six offsides called.
• The match got chippy, especially in the second half. Overall there were 43 fouls called and 14 cards issued.
• The Lion defense put on a clinic in the opening half. They allowed just one shot on goal in the first half and just six total.
• GCU had a number of blocked shots and didn't were in the Lightning passing lanes, not allowing for any scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes.
• Georgian Court was applying plenty of pressure and just when it seemed like the Lightning weathered the storm,
Cherif Tammar picked off a pass in the middle of the Lions offensive zone which created an odd-man rush.
• Tammar dished to
Mathias Madersbacher who shot right to left and past the keeper for the game's first goal.
• Neither team had much in the way of scoring chances following the goal. A GCU yellow card with less than three minutes in the half gave Goldey-Beacom a free-kick from just outside the 18-yard box.
• Eduardo Coimbra's shot was scooped up on the short hop by Fabio Krisser who was then hit from behind by Tumi Sekhampu as a yellow was issued on the Lightning.
• Coming out of the half, Goldey-Beacom needed just 76 seconds to tie the match. Tumi Sekhampu scored with an assist from his goalkeeper for a 1-1 tie.
• Nearly 10 minutes late, GCU got the goal box. A foul sent Madersbacher to the line for a penalty kick and he drilled his second goal of the game in the 55th minute.
• Goals started coming fast and furious. GBC tied things at two in the 67th minute. Sincere Kato sent a cross to Pedro Maia who's diving header beat Krissler.
• Just two minutes later, the Lightning took their first lead. Ogunfadebo sent a through ball which knicked off a Lion defender to Eduardo Coimbra who dribbled past Krissler and found the back of the next for a 3-2 lead.
• The lead didn't last a minute of playing time as a yellow card gave GCU a free kick just outside the top of the box. And who else but Madersbacher took it and snuck it inside the goal post for his third goal of the game.
• The scoring slowed down for a bit after that, but things got dicey late for the Lions.
David Tuschmann was sent off with a straight red card and GCU had to play with just 10 for the final 7:11 of the match.
• With just over five minutes left to play, GCU was called for their fifth yellow card of the game. That gave GBC a free kick opportunity from about 25 yards out. The free kick was sent into the box where Pedro Maia got a head on it, but sent it right into Krissler's chest who made the save.
• Georgian Court had a tremendous opportunity at a game winner with 90 seconds left. A foul gave the Lions a free kick that was sent into the box and found
Sebastian Derflinger. His turnaround shot was on target but Jones made a terrific save to keep the game tied at three.
• With 10 seconds left, the eighth yellow card was called against the Lightning. GCU took a free kick from 40 yards out, but it was cleared out of bounds as time expired.
