LAKEWOOD, NJ (Sept. 26, 2023) - Georgian Court's three match unbeaten streak came to an end Tuesday afternoon in Lakewood. In a game filled with wind and rain, moving the game to the GCU turf field, it was Holy Family who came out on top, 2-1. The loss drops GCU to 1-3-2 this season and is their first in conference play this season as they're 1-1-1 in the CACC.
How it Happened
• Shots were dead even at 18 for each team. Georgian Court was up in shots on goal 7-6.
• Possession totals were also nearly identical with Holy Family holding the slightest of edges, 51%-49%.
• The match featured 14 corner kicks, eight for the Lions and six for the Tigers.
• There were also 25 total fouls called. While HFU was called for 16 infractions, they were booked with three yellow cards. Georgian Court was whistled for nine fouls but issued four yellows.
• Holy Family was controlling play early on. They were peppering the net, with a shot blocked and a
Fabio Krissler save. Both of those resulted in corner kicks for the Tigers.
• With the Tigers still deep in the GCU zone, Gavin Rowan found Tajhay Williams who was able to put the first goal on the board in the seventh minute.
• Both teams were trading opportunities, but GCU still couldn't get anything to go on net.
• Krissler made a number of saves to keep the game at 1-0 in the first half.
• The Lions had their best opportunity in the half when
Mathias Madersbacher had a shot at the net. Luke Shank was up to task though, making the save.
• Early in the second half, Madersbacher had another chance to tie, but again, Shank made the save to keep it out.
• That save resulted in a GCU corner kick where
Ibrahim Madad had a chance, but missed wide.
• Just two minutes after Shank's save on Madersbacher, the Tigers broke out. Williams got past Krissler but the ball kissed off the post. It redirected right to Sean Touey though who banged it home for a 2-0 lead with 35 minutes to play.
• The Lions were the ones controlling play in the second half, desperate to get on the board. They outshot the Tigers 11-7 in the final 45 minutes.
• In the 84th minute, Madersbacher had yet another opportunity in front of the net to score, but Shank stymied him a third time.
• In the final minute, a HFU foul gave the Lions a free kick from 40 yards out.
Mikey Mallon took it and set it into the box where
Gijs Van Eif was able to break the shutout with his second goal of the season.
• The goal came with just 13 seconds left however and Holy Family kicked the ball deep to end the game.
