Lions Score Three in Second Half of Win Over American International

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Sept. 28, 2023) - Georgian Court Men's Soccer played a scoreless first 45 minutes against American International, but the second half was a different story. The Lions and Yellow Jackets scored five in the second half, three for the Lions as GCU came out on top 3-2.

How it Happened
• American International was in control of play for 53% of the match. It was Georgian Court though who led in shots 23-15.
• The Lions also had the edge in shots on target, 9-6.
• In the first half, GCU outshot AIC 14-7, but neither team were able to get on the board.
• The match featured 27 fouls and six yellow cards. The second half wasn't just action packed in terms of goals. There were also 17 fouls and four cards issued.
• Early on in the game, Ayendi Batista getting the start in net kept things scoreless.
• Chance were coming for the Lions, but they were unable to capitalize in the first half.
• Finally, Georgian Court broke through. They scored just 2:15 into the second half. Mathias Madersbacher found Cherif Tammar who finished to put GCU ahead 1-0.
• Ten minutes later, Rhys Cotter made a cross to Joseph Ficarotta who was able to get around the AIC keeper and score into an open net for a 2-0 lead.
• American International cut the lead in half in the 77th minute. A handball in the box sent Ali Taleb to the line. Batista guessed wrong and Taleb cut the lead in half.
• It took two minutes for the Lions to get a two-goal lead back. David Tuschmann's through pass connected with Cole Sullivan who beat a defender and the challenging goal keeper making it 3-1 with 12 minutes left to play.
• With seven minutes left, another handball in the box again sent Taleb to the line for a PK. He was successful again as the lead was cut to one.
• GCU was able to play keep away the final seven minutes and held on for a 3-2 win.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Tammar scored while getting two shots on goal.
• Ficarotta and Sullivan each added goals off the bench.
• Tuschmann, Madersbacher and Cotter connected for assists.
• Mallon ripped off three shots.
• Batista made four saves in goal.

For the Yellow Jackets
• Justus Wetzel started in net and came up with six saves.
• Ali Taleb came off the bench and scored two penalty kick goals.
• Simba Pelletier led AIC with three shots.

News and Notes
• The win is the 100th in the career of Dino Raso.
• Batista's win in net is the first of his career. 
• This is the Lions first ever win over AIC. They were 0-2 previously with their last meeting coming in 2018.
• Tuschmann's assist gives him 10 career points.
• Maurice Engl played in his 30th career game.
• The Lions nine points and three assists are season-highs.
