ERIE, Pa. (Sept. 3, 2023) - Georgian Court finished their weekend taking on No. 25 Mercyhurst in their second match in Erie, Pa. The Lions showed life late scoring a penalty kick goal, but ultimately fell 2-1 as they drop to 0-2 on the season.
How it Happened
• The Mercyhurst defense made things difficult for the Lions. Georgian Court totaled just two shots, one of which was a penalty kick.Â
• The Lakers totaled 15 shots with nine going on net. Mercyhurst controlled possession for 60% of the match with 57% taking place in the GCU half of the field
• Fouls and cautions were aplenty. Merchyhurst racked up 24 fouls with six yellow and one red card. Georgian Court was called for 15 fouls with four yellows and one red card.Â
• Just over 10 minutes into the match, Mercyhurst got on the board as Dylan Sumner shot low and scored the games first goal.
• Georgian Court didn't get their first shot until 37:42 of the first half.
Cherif Tammar had a chance after a corner kick but couldn't put it on target.
• At the half, Mercyhurst led in shots 5-1, shots on goal, 4-0 and corner kicks 4-2.
• Georgian Court kept things close in the second, but scoring chances were few for the Lions.
• The Lakers added a second in the 71st minute as Andreas Rossak flicked a cross from Frank Lovett just past
Fabio Krissler for a 2-0 lead.
• A red card gave the Lions a chance to cut the lead in half.
Mikey Mallon took a penalty kick and scored in the 87th minute to make it a 2-1 game.
• Georgian Court had one more chance in the closing minute getting an offensive zone free kick. But the kick bounced around before falling out of bounds for a Mercyhurst goal kick that effectively ended the game.
