WATERBURY, Conn. (Sept. 30, 2023) - Through four CACC games, Georgian Court Women's Soccer remains unbeaten. However for the third time in those four matches, GCU played to a draw. This time it was on the road at Post where the teams played to a 1-1 tie. GCU is now 2-3-4 overall and 1-0-3 in the CACC.
How it Happened
• Georgian Court was on offense much of the match as they rattled off 14 shots and put nine on target.
• Post totaled just eight total shots and tested the Lion keepers just four times.
• GCU also logged seven corner kicks while Post earned just four.
• Foul numbers were low with 11 combined whistles and no cards issued.
• There was a barrage of shots early on in the match.
Carley Polchak made her first save just 90 seconds in and a second Post shot missed wide.
• An Eagles offsides call gave GCU a freekick and they were able to build momentum off of that.
• The Lions got off four shots, two on net in a 2:43 span. Post keeper Alexis Campbell made consecutive stops on
Breana Parkinson and
Juliana Rettino shot attempts.
• GCU kept the pressure up as Parkinson added another shot as did
Abby Kennelly, but Campbell kept the ball out of the net.
• With under 20 minutes left to play in the first, Post broke though. A throw in by the goal line bounced over a Lion defender. Amber McGee got a head on it and Lydia Asamoah was able to chip it into the net for a 1-0 lead.
• The Lions had a couple more looks at the net before the end of the half, including two from
Gabriella Paccione, one high and one that Campbell stopped. The Lions led in shots 9-6 at the half, but trailed 1-0 where it counted.
• Georgian Court made a change at goalkeeper to start the second half.
Emma Bennett entered and was tested five minutes into the half. She made a stop on Alyssa Hebb for her first save of the game.
• In the 57th minute, the Lions finally found the equalizer.
Ashley Merizalde did the work. She caused a turnover, dribbled through three Eagle defenders, found an open space and fired a shot from the left corner of the box into the upper right corner of the net, tying the match at one.
• Shortly after the Merizalde goal, GCU had two more shots on net but couldn't grab the lead.
• Post didn't tally another shot on the goal the rest of the game as the Lion defense shut them down.
• In the end, neither team was able to break through for a second goal and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
