LAKEWOOD, NJ (Sept. 30) - Georgian Court Volleyball closed out the month of September at home against Bridgeport. The Purple Knights took the first two sets before the Lions got one back. GCU hung tough in the fourth set as well, but Bridgeport survived winning in four sets 25-20, 25-18, 22-25, 25-21. The Lions record is now even at 7-7 on the season and they're 2-3 in the CACC.
How it Happened
• The Lions hit just under .200 for the match at .194. They totaled 47 kills and 21 errors.
• Bridgeport hit .232 overall with 54 kills and 22 attack errors.
• Service aces were again an issue for the Lions as they allowed 13 while landing just five themselves.
• GCU had the edge in blocking 8-5.
• The match featured 14 total ties and eight lead changes. Most of those were in the opening set that saw eight tie scores and five lead changes.
Set 1
• Georgian Court scored the first three points in the match with a pair of kills from
Giorgia Cappelletti and
Martina Croce.
• That lead didn't last long though as Bridgeport came right back to tie. The teams went back and forth from there with the set still even at 13-13.
• Two kills and a service ace gave Bridgeport a three-point lead and they never trailed again.
• The Purple Knights closed the set on a 12-7 run. They totaled 13 kills and took set one 25-20.
Set 2
• Georgian Court again scored the first three points in the set and again Bridgeport came right back to tie.
• This time though, once Bridgeport took the lead, they never gave it back.
• The Purple Knights pushed that lead to as much as seven, 15-8.
• The Lions fought back to get to within three on six occasions, but no closer as the Purple Knights went up 2-0, 25-18.
Set 3
• With the third set tied at four, Georgian Court scored six straight points to take a 10-4 lead.
Nylene Mateo and
Amiyah Woods led the charge with three kills and a block each during the run.
• The Lions led by as much as seven, but Bridgeport didn't go quietly. They slowly crept back into the set and got to within one, 21-20.
• Still leading by one, 22-21, the Lions got kills from Woods and Cappelletti to go up 24-21 and stayed alive 25-22.Â
• Mateo and Woods each scored six points in the set.
Set 4
• GCU kept the momentum going in the fourth set. They hit a match-high .333 with 14 kills and just two errors for the set.
• Bridgeport scored 15 of their own kills and the Lions hurt themselves with three service errors, a blocking error and a ball handling error. Bridgeport scored four aces while making just two of those unforced errors.
• The Purple Knights took the early lead and although they never trailed, the Lions hung tough throughout.
• Bridgeport pushed their lead to a set-high four, 19-15, but the Lions responded with four straight to tie. Kills from Woods and Cappelletti tied the set and forced a timeout.
• The set was still tied at 21 when a GCU service error gave the Purple Knights the lead back. A questionable ball-handling error was called against the Lions giving Bridgeport a two-point lead. They scored the final two on kills to win the set and the match, 25-21.
Lion Stat Leaders

Nylene Mateo finished with a team-best 13 kills and 15 digs. She hit .323 for the match.
•
Giorgia Cappelletti also recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.
•
Amiyah Woods hit .421 with 11 kills and five blocks.

Martina Croce and
Chelsea Ross each totaled five kills.
•
Iciar Zayas passed out 37 assists while adding seven digs.
•
Jessica Sprankle landed three service aces with four assists and nine digs.
For the Purple Knights
• Hailey Jessen had a match-high 17 kills.
• Grace Presswood added 12 with 10 digs.
• Jaden Drollinger dished 46 assists with three kills, five aces and seven digs.
• Lucia Tomiello hit .417 with nine kills and 11 digs.

• All-time the Lions are 2-7 now against Bridgeport and 0-2 in CACC action. Both conference matches were Purple Knight wins in four sets.
