Georgian Court Comes Up Short in CACC South Battle With Wilmington

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Jan. 17, 2024) - In a game that saw seven ties and 11 lead changes, Georgian Court didn't have the final lead. That belonged to Wilmington who outscored the Lions by 10 in the second half of an 80-69 Wildcat win. Georgian Court had three in double-figures but it wasn't enough as the Lions fall to 2-14 on the season, 0-5 in the CACC.

How it Happened
• It was a tale of two halves for the Lions. They shot 47% in the first, making 6-10 from downtown, but were just 3-12 from deep in the second and connected at 34% overall.
• Wilmington improved from the first to second half. After shooting 45% for the first 20 minutes, they were 56.5% over the final 20.
• The Wildcats did well at the foul line shooting 20-24. Georgian Court was just 8-11.
• Both teams turned the ball over, GCU lost it 16 and Wilmington 14. But the Wildcats scored 26 points off those turnovers and the Lions just 16.
• Wilmington also was sharp in transition scoring 20 fastbreak points.
First Half
• The teams were trading blows to start the game, neither able to gain much of an edge.
• Wilmington took their largest lead of the half, 23-17, thanks to a 10-3 run midway through the frame.
• That lead didn't last long though. Jahsan Johnson hit a three to cut the lead in half and Clint Wright, Jr. took it back with a three of his own putting GCU on top 26-25 with 8:46 left in the first.
• Again the teams traded baskets and the lead throughout the rest of the half.
• Wilmington went back on top by four, 41-37, from an Amiri Stewart three-point play.
• On the Lions final possession, Justin Harper grabbed an offensive rebound, found Cameron Edmonds open for three who connected and GCU went into the half trailing by just one, 41-40.
Second Half
• A Harper turnaround jumper two minutes into the second gave GCU a one-point lead of their own, 44-43, but the Lions went cold after that.
• Wilmington scored 10 straight over a 2:19 period. Stewart scored six and Taalib Holloman four. Another three-point play from Stewart put the Wildcats ahead nine, 53-44.
• The Lions brought the lead down to five, but a Wildcat layup, followed by a Lion turnover and a Wildcat three gave Wilmington their first double-digit lead, 64-54 with 10:54 left to play.
• Georgian Court was unable to bring the lead down any more than eight the rest of the game and Wilmington escaped with an 80-69 win.
