LAKEWOOD, NJ (Jan. 20, 2024) - Georgian Court Men's Basketball held a six-point halftime lead, 36-30, but couldn't hang on as Bloomfield pulled ahead down the stretch for a 72-58 win.
How it Happened
• The Lions struggled shooting the ball connecting at just 32% overall and 4-19 from three. Bloomfield shot 40% and 6-23 from three, but were 50% overall in the second half.
• Bloomfield did a good job of getting to the foul line, but were just 20-35. Georgian Court was 10-14 at the stripe.
• Rebounding numbers were even at 44 and even though GCU held a 20-16 edge on the offensive glass, it was the Bears who outscored the Lions 18-15 in second-chance points.
• Georgian Court turned the ball over 17 times, leading to 16 Bear points. Bloomfield lost the ball 14 times and GCU scored 10 off those turnovers.
First Half
• It was a slow and low-scoring start to the game. Five minutes into the game, GCU trailed 7-4, when
Taheen Braswell-Brown tied it with an old-fashioned three-point play.
• Tied at 11, GCU took control of the game midway through the half with a, 8-1 scoring run. That gave GCU a seven-point lead, 19-12 with 8:43 left in the half.
• That lead quickly vanished though. Took just 2:30 for Bloomfield to outscored GCU 10-2 and take a 22-21 lead.
• Georgian Court though answered and retook a two-possession lead which is where it stayed for the rest of the half.
• The end of the half was a near disaster for the Lions though. Leading by eight, GCU sent Izaiah Poole to the line who hit two free throws with four seconds left. On the inbound, GCU lost the ball and Deavion Ellis had a clear lane to the basket, but the buzzer sounded before the ball was out of his hands and GCU led by six instead of four, 36-30 at the break.
Second Half
• Coming out of the half, Georgian Court pushed their lead to a game-high 10, 42-32 following consecutive
Clint Wright, Jr. three-pointers. The Lions were 0-10 in the first half from distance, but hit their first two in the second.
• That's where the scoring stopped though for the Lions. They were held scoreless for seven minutes and in that time, Bloomfield took the lead back scoring 16 unanswered points. GCU was 0-10 during the stretch and turned the ball over five times.
•
Kamaal Cox put an end to the scoring drought with a basket, but a Bears three with 9:28 to play put them up seven, 53-46.
• Georgian Court though didn't quit and actually scored nine straight of their own.
Clint Wright, Jr. tied the game with another three and Cox hit a layup putting the Lions up 55-53 with 6:01 to play.
• But it was another scoring drought for the Lions that they couldn't recover from. After Bloomfield tied the game at 55 with 5:44 left, neither team scored for more than three minutes.
• With less than three to play, the game was still tied at 55. Bloomfield took the lead for good with a jumper and the floodgates opened back up.
• From 2:45 to the end of the game, Bloomfield outscored the Lions 17-3. The Bears scored 10 straight for a 65-55 lead, and by the time the Bears ended the scoring drought with a minute to play, it was too late. The final seconds ticked down and a game that was 55-55 with three minutes to play, ended in a 72-58 Bloomfield win.
