Lions, Knights Play to Scoreless Draw

FLUSHING, NY (Oct. 12, 2024) - If a game ends in a 0-0 draw, was it really played? Well we can assure you that yes, Georgian Court Women's Soccer and Queens played a match Saturday evening. And yes, that match ended in a scoreless draw. It's the Lions first tie of the season as Georgian Court is now 8-3-1 on the year.

How it Happened
• Georgian Court finished with more shots than Queens, 14-11, but it was the Knights who were the more active team in the second half, picking up either of the 11 shots.
• GCU was also more accurate, putting nine shots on goal while Queens managed just five on net.
• Queens was slowed down by 17 fouls called against. The Lions were dinged for just seven. Neither team was issued a yellow card.
• A nondescript first half may have seen more action outside the sidelines than in. The game averaged a throw in every minute. There were 45 in the opening half as the ball was routinely played out of bounds.
• Of those 45 throw-ins, 13 came before the first shot. That came from Izzy Hernandez which Samantha Hines-Hirsch was able to stop.
• There wasn't much sustained pressure. Georgian Court led 7-3 in shots and 6-1 in shots on goal, but each one was gobbled up and the opportunity thwarted.
• Things did pick up a bit in the second half, especially for Queens. They put a shot on net in the first two minutes, but Delanie Wilkinson was up to task.
• Still within the first 10 minutes, Queens was building a bit of momentum with a shot that Wilkinson got a hand on and pushed over the bar which led to a corner kick. Nothing came from the set piece though.
Juliana RettinoSeanna Boan and Sophia Ridolfo got consecutive shots off which Hirsch made saves on.
• Shots slowed down later in the half. Each team had a chance in the final three minutes but had shots blocked as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Delanie Wilkinson made five saves.
Seanna Boan had a team-best four shots, three on goal.

For the Knights
• Samantha Hines-Hirsch made a game-high nine saves.
• Julia Ragone rattled off six shots with three going on net.

News and Notes
• A couple of minute milestones in the game. Sophia Ridolfo surpassed 3,000. Izzy Hernandez and Paige Coulahan surpassed 2,500.
• This was the Lions first draw of the season after finishing each of the last two seasons with at least six.
• It's the Lions first scoreless draw since playing to three of them in 2022. It's also the 17th all-time in the history of the program.
• Delanie Wilkinson has played at least 70 minutes in five games and has kept opponents scoreless in three of them.
• The Lions did not allow a single goal this week and now have pitched five shutouts in 11 games.
