PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Oct. 30, 2024) - Georgian Court Volleyball made their return trip to Chestnut Hill Wednesday night. The Lions got the better of the Griffins in Lakewood and CHC made sure to return the favor in their home building with a 3-1 (19-25, 26-24, 25-27, 18-25) win. The loss brings these two teams closer in the CACC South standings and the Lions fall to 13-9 and 9-2 in the CACC.
How it Happened
• Chestnut Hill hit .170 for the match, but GCU was near .100 at .120. The Lions hit 46 kills and 28 attack errors. The Griffins totaled 50 kills against 25 attack errors.
• Georgian Court struggled on the service line. They hit just three aces with 11 service errors. CHC also hit their share of service errors, 14, but nearly evened it out with 11 aces.
• Defensive numbers were near equal. The Lions put back one more block, 7-6 and the Griffins picked up two more digs, 65-63
Set 1
• Chestnut Hill scored the first three points of the match, two on Lion attack errors. They quickly went up six, 9-3, but GCU got back to within two, 11-9, thanks to a 6-2 run.
• Still just a two-point game, the Griffins scored nine of 10 to take a commanding 20-11 lead.
• Georgian Court was able to make it a bit closer, but Chestnut Hill was never threatened and put the first set away, 25-19.
Set 2
• Once again, Chestnut Hill took an early lead in the frame, getting up by as much as five, 10-5.
• GCU went on a 10-5 run of their own to tie things up at 15 with
Nylene Mateo's kill evening the set.
• After it was tied at 15, the score was tied at each point all the way up to 24.
• CHC tied the set at 24, but gave the lead right back with a service error and an attack error allowed the Lions to tie the match at one.
Set 3
• This time it was Georgian Court's turn to take an early lead. They scored the first four points, getting a kill from Mateo and three Griffin errors.
• Georgian Court continued to lead until CHC scored four straight to tie at 13.
• Neither team gained a two-point edge until back-to-back
Chelsea Ross blocks put the Lions up 20-18.
• The Lions were primed to take a 2-1 lead in the match when a Griffin attack error put the Lions at set point, 24-22. But Chestnut Hill scored three straight to take a 25-24 lead of their own.
• Tied at 25, a kill and a service ace from the Griffins turned the tides and handed the home team that 2-1 match lead.
Set 4
• Georgian Court appeared to still be reeling after dropping that third set and spotted Chestnut Hill five of the first six points.
• The Lions righted the ship an a Mateo service ace tied things at seven.
• But Georgian Court was never able to take the lead. CHC pushed the lead back up to six, 16-10. GCU responded with a 4-0 run to get to within two, but that's as close as they got.Â
• Leading by three, 21-18, Chestnut Hill scored the final four points, the last two on Lion attack errors to win the match 3-1.Â
• The Griffins hit .200 points higher than GCU in the set, .316 to .116.Â

Nylene Mateo landed 19 kills and earned a double-double with 10 digs.

Giorgia Cappelletti was a kill shy of a double-double finishing with nine kills and a game-high 19 digs.

For the Griffins
• Erika Dubosky finished with an 11-kill, 11-dig double-double.
• Angela April scored 16 total points with 11 kills, two solo blocks and three aces.
• Rachel Mace led CHC with 18 digs and added nine kills and three aces.
• Mia Caporellie handed out 46 assists.Â

Giorgia Cappelletti landed her 100th career service ace and also surpassed 600 career points.
•
Nylene Mateo surpassed 1500 career points. Her service ace moved her to ninth all-time in Lions history.
• This is the first time in three matches between these two the Lions haven't won sets 1, 2, and 5.
• Georgian Court is still 28-7 all-time against the Griffins, but CHC has now won four of the last six.
• Chestnut Hill has hit 29 service aces against the Lions. They hit 15 in match one and 14 in match two, the two highest single-game total by a Lion opponent this season.
