Lions Suffer First CACC Loss at Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2024) - Georigan Court Volleyball took their first loss in conference play Tuesday night. The Lions were swept by Holy Family, with two of the three sets determined by the minimum, two points. The loss puts GCU at 7-6 overall and 4-1 in the CACC.

How it Happened
• Holy Family's hitters were feasting hitting .305 for the match with 45 kills. GCU by contrast hit .173 with just 31 kills.
• HFU also got a couple points on service with two more aces than the Lions.
• The Lions put back just four blocks and the Tigers three.
• Holy Family's defense scooped 10 more digs than the Lions, 52-42.
Set 1
• After Holy Family took a 2-1 lead, the Tigers never trailed again.
• They scored a kill on 10 of their first 11 swings.
• HFU piled on eventually going up 10, 20-10, and cruised to a 25-13 win in set one.
Set 2
• Georgian Court put up much more fight in the second set, but still couldn't overcome the Tigers.
• Holy Family scored five straight for a 10-5 lead.
• The teams traded points for a bit, until Holy Family went up eight, 22-14.
• That's when GCU turned it on. They went on an 9-2 run and got to within one, 24-23.
• The set ended though with an uncharacteristic Giorgia Cappelletti service error and the Tigers escaped with a 25-23 set two win.
Set 3
• Despite the way the set ended, Georgian Court kept up the momentum into set three. 
• They scored eight of the first 10 points to jump on top of HFU.
• Holy Family chipped away though and kept it close, getting to within two, 19-17.
• The Lions responded right away with back-to-back blocks. Chelsea Ross a part of both.
• GCU went up six, 23-17, but couldn't put the Tigers away.
• A Ross kill got the Lions to set point, 24-20, but Holy Family scored the final six points to complete the sweep. 

Lion Stat Leaders
• Giorgia Cappelletti fell a kill shy of a double-double with nine kills and 14 digs with four service aces.
• Chelsea Ross also scored nine kills with four blocks.
• Iciar Zayas passed out 16 assists to lead GCU.
• Dayna Diaz was a dig shy of a double-double with 10 assists and nine digs.

For the Tigers
• Shelby Kinzer finished with a game-high 12 kills and seven digs and three service aces.
• Jayden Bralts was also in double-figures with 10 kills.
• Morgan Steck passed out 36 assists with eight digs.
• Cadence Palmer recorded a game-best 17 digs.

News and Notes
• With her four blocks, Chelsea Ross has tied coach Shana Rayside for fifth all-time at Georgian Court with 277.
• Holy Family improves to 25-22 all-time against Georgian Court.
• This is the first time the Lions have been swept by a CACC opponent in almost two years. The last time it happened, Oct. 27, 2022 at Jefferson.
