Fourth-Set Comeback Fuels Lions Win Over Caldwell

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Oct. 18, 2025) - For a moment in set four, trailing the match 2-1 and the set 21-13, things weren't looking good for Georgian Court. The unofficial win probability was at less than 1%. But there's no running out the clock in volleyball. All 25 points (and sometimes more) need to be scored to win a set. And the Lions turned it on at exactly the right moment. They not only came-from-behind to steal set four, but had a big rally in set five to steal a win from the claws of defeat, 3-2, over Caldwell (19-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-23, 15-7). The win moves Georgian Court to 3-5 in the CACC.

How it Happened
• Caldwell outhit Georgian Court .174-.145. The Lions had more kills, 53-50, but also seven more attack errors.
• Each team hit nine service aces in the match. Caldwell also hit 13 errors to the Lions eight.
• On the defensive side, Caldwell 6-5 in blocks while the Lions were up in digs 65-58.

Set 1
• Caldwell got off to a hot start in four of the five sets. That includes the first where they jumped out to an early 9-4 lead.
• GCU slowly chipped away and cut it down to one, 17-16, following an Amber Gallo service ace.
• The Cougars held off the Lions though scoring three straight. They got two kills and an ace for the final three points and a 25-19 set one win.
• That was Caldwell's best offensive set as they hit .303 with 14 kills and just four errors.

Set 2
• Caldwell took that momentum right to the start of set two where they scored eight of the first nine points and looked to put a stranglehold on the match.
• But once again the Lions slowly chipped away at the Cougar lead. This time they were able to bring the set to a tie at 19 and Emily Hauptvogel grabbed the lead with a kill, 20-19.
• Tied at 21, Georgian Court scored the final four points, the last two on Hauptvogel kills as they evened the match with a 25-21 win.

Set 3
• Georgian Court failed to capitalize on that win though and gave Caldwell the lead right back.
• GCU hit 10 kills and 12 attack errors for a -.054 hit percentage in the set.
• For the third straight set, Caldwell got off to a quick start, leading 5-2. They extended that lead pushing it to 17-10.
• The Lions responded though scoring six of seven points and making it a two-point game, 18-16.
• Caldwell closed the set on a 7-2 run and held on for a 25-18 set three win.

Set 4
• The fourth set was the only time GCU jumped out to a lead. They scored the first five points getting five straight kills, two apiece from Genesis Simanca and Iciar Zayas and one from Emma Gildea.
• That lead didn't last long though and everything started to go wrong for the Lions.
• Caldwell went on a 21-8 run and looked to be closing in on a four-set win up 21-13.
• But GCU scored three straight to inch their way closer.
• After Caldwell got one back, the Lions went on a 6-0 run and tied the set at 22-all. A crucial point came on a back-row attack violation call that took a point off the board for Caldwell and a 23-21 lead, and tied the set at 22.
• The Cougars got the lead back, 23-22, but GCU scored the final three to come all the way back, completing a 12-2 run, and force a fifth set.

Set 5
• If Caldwell was dejected from letting that fourth set slip away, they didn't show it early scoring four of the first five points.
• But things fell apart after that. The Lions scored 13 of the final 15 points. Maggy Hallihan hit a pair of service aces to held GCU grab the lead.
• Leading 9-7, the Lions scored the final six points. They were helped out by three Caldwell mistakes, but hit .250 in that final frame while the Cougars hit two kills and four errors.
