DUE WEST, SC (Feb. 28, 2025) - The first ever Georgian Court Baseball games were played Friday afternoon. The Lions traveled down to South Carolina to take on Erskine. The Lions did well for themselves and put up two competitive games, but ultimately fell to the Flying Fleet 6-1 and 6-2.
Game 1 - Erskine 6, Georgian Court 1
How it Happened
• The Lions outhit Erskine 9-6. Each team had a double as the only extra-base hits of the game.
• GCU issued too many free passes with seven walks and three hit batters. The Fleet hit three, but didn't walk any.
• Georgian Court committed the only two errors of the game which led to two unearned runs.
• Georgian Court had a couple of early opportunities and failed to score. In the second,
Tomas Tamargo led off with a double, but was stranded there.
• The third saw
Caleb Carter single with a runner in scoring position, but a terrific throw from left field nailed
Carter Rieben at the plate to keep the game scoreless.
• It wasn't scoreless long though as Erskine finally cracked through in the fourth. A leadoff single came around to score following a walk, sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly.
• GCU tied things in the top half of the fifth.
Caleb Carter with another two-out single, this time scoring a run to tie the game at one.
• The Flying Fleet responded in the home half with two unearned runs scoring oan a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.
• Erskine extended their lead in the eighth as four straight reached base with two outs. Three walks and a bases-clearing double brought the game to the 6-1 final score.
Lion Stat Leaders
•
Caleb Carter finished 2-4 with an RBI hit.
•
Tomas Tamargo collected a single and a double.
•
Carter Rieben reached base three times with a single and two hit-by-pitches. He scored the Lions only run.
•
Israel Garcia was 2-3.
•
Ryan Bilello got the start allowing three runs, one earned on five hits in 4.2 innings.
•
Jaydon Cabezudo didn't allow a hit in three innings, but was tagged for three runs after walking three in the eighth. He also struck out a pair.
For the Fleet
• Jude Littrell was 2-4 with the big three-run double in the eighth.
• Josean Sanchez scored twice and stole a base.
• Elliott Sanders reached base all four times with two singles and two walks. He also scored twice.
• Joe Alegre got the start and allowed a run on six hits in five innings with four strikeouts.
• Jared Guell struck out four in four scoreless innings allowing just three hits.
Game 2 - Erskine 2, Georgian Court 2
How it Happened
• Georgian Court scored two runs on six hits with one extra-base hit.
• The Fleet poked 10 hits and scored six times. Four of the 10 hits were for extra bases with two home runs.
• GCU again put a lot of runners on with six walks. They struck out four while Erskine pitchers walked three and fanned 12.
• Each team made just one error in the field.
• The Lions led off the game with a
Carter Rieben double, but failed to score.
• Base runners were a problem early for the Lions. The Fleet loaded the bases in the first and third innings, but GCU was able to escape unscathed.
• Erskine finally broke through in the fourth. They hit back-to-back homeruns, the first coming with two on to open up a 4-0 lead.
• Georgian Court got on the board in the sixth with a pair of RBI singles from
Alex Elliott and
Sammy Cruz.
• Erskine continued to add on, scoring a run each in the sixth and seventh with two-out run scoring singles.

Sammy Cruz had a two-hit day going 2-4 with an RBI.

Alex Elliott drove in a run with a single and scored.
•
Carter Rieben doubled, walked and stole a base.
•
Joe Voli didn't allow a run, but walked five and struck out one lasting just 2.2 innings.
For the Fleet
• Roman Edwards got the win throwing five shutout innings with six strikeouts.
• Josean Sanchez collected three hits, scored and drove in a run.
• Jorge Pascual had the biggest hit, a three-run homer.
• Pierce Radke finished 2-5 with a solo home run and two runs batted in.

• The first official plate appearance in Georgian Court history was not an official at bat.
Carter Rieben was hit by a pitch leading off the game.
Frank Marra, batting second took the first official at bat.
