Baseball Plays First Ever Home Games Saturday Afternoon

TOMS RIVER, NJ (March 15, 2025) - Georgian Court Baseball had another program first Saturday afternoon. Two of them actually. The Lions hosted their first ever games and played in their first ever CACC games. GCU hosted defending CACC Tournament Champions Post and despite holding their own in game two, the Eagles swept the doubleheader 14-4 and 5-4.

Game 1 -Post 14, Georgian Court 4
How it Happened

• Post put up 20 hits to score 14 runs. The Lions collected 11.
• The Eagles power was on display with seven extra-base hits including a pair of home runs. GCU knocked nine singles, a double and a home run.
• The defense was mostly clean with just one error and no unearned runs.
• Both staffs limited the walks with each team walking two. GCU batter struck out nine times while the pitchers fanned just three.
• Post got an early run with a first inning sacrifice fly. They added three more in the third with another sacrifice fly and a two-run double from Hayden Roberge before a Eric Perez home run to lead off the fourth made it 5-0.
• Georgian Court had chances to score early on. They put two runners on with one out in the second and fourth innings and failed to score each time.
• The Eagles really did damage in the fifth. Perez hit another two-RBI double to right center before Dario Sosa hit a laser of a home run to left to score three more, bringing the lead to 10-0.
• The Lions finally got on the board in the sixth thanks to a long ball of their own. Israel Garcia launched a two-out, three-run home run for Georgian Court's first runs.
• GCU made it a 10-4 game in the seventh as Larry Rodriguez slid in safely on a wild pitch.
• The Lions had another chance to really make a game of it in the eighth. They put the first two on with nobody out and loaded the bases with one out, but a ground ball double play ended the inning.
• Post tacked on four more in the ninth to get to the 14-4 final score.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Israel Garcia reached base all four times with a home run and three runs batted in.
• Sammy Cruz and Tomas Tamargo each singled twice and scored.
• Brady Parks got the start lasting 4.1 innings allowing eight runs on 11 hits.
• Miguel Rivera III came in to throw the final four innings. He allowed four runs, all in the ninth on seven hits.

For the Eagles
• Brandon Holligan earned the win throwing six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.
• Justin Rivera doubled twice as a part of a 3-6 day with three RBI.
• Eric Perez was 2-4 with a home run, three runs and three RBI.
• Rene Vega III finished 3-5 with two runs out of the nine hole.

Game 2 - Post 5, Georgian Court 4
How it Happened

• Game two is the designated seven inning game.
• Post collected five runs on nine hits while GCU scored four on seven hits.
• Once again Post pitchers struck out nine. GCU fanned five, but also walked five.
• This one started with GCU scoring first. Post threatened putting two in scoring position with one out, but a line drive double play started by Frank Marra ended the scoring chance.
• The Lions wasted no time scoring themselves. Alex Elliott drove in Carter Rieben who walked to lead off the inning.
• Israel Garcia hit his second home run of the day in the second to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
• The Eagles responded getting a two-out RBI single in the third to cut the lead in half. They then led off the fourth with a double and a pair of RBI singles gave Post their first lead, 3-2.
• Georgian Court took the lead right back in the home half of the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Josh Moreno hit one to short on the drawn in infield and Jesse Alfalla's throw home sailed high and far enough away for two runs to score.
• The Lions couldn't push any more runs across, but led 4-3 after four.
• In the fifth, Post left two runners on as Samir Lopez worked into and out of trouble, getting a strikeout looking to end the inning.
• The Eagles loaded the bases again in the sixth. Damareus Rodriguez singled to left to tie the game and while the go-ahead runner at third was initially held up, when the throw home got past the catcher, Isaiah Velazco scored to give Post a 5-4 lead.
• It was still a 5-4 Post lead in the seventh and final inning. After the first two were retired, GCU threatened. Frank Marra was hit by a pitch and Alex Elliott singled up the middle.
• Daniel Atiles pinch ran for Elliott and took off for second on the first pitch. The catcher faked the throw down to second but Marra drifted too far down the line and was caught in no-mans-land. Post executed the pickle play to perfection and escaped the jam to hold on for the win.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Alex Elliott collected a pair of hits and drove in a run.
• Austin Keefer started and threw the first four innings giving up three runs on five hits.
• Tomas Tamargo and Israel Garcia each had a hit and a run.
• Joshua Moreno drove in a run with an infield hit.

For the Eagles
• Jake Baumann was terrific out of the bullpen. He got the win throwing the final 3.1 innings allowing just a hit and a walk while striking out six.
• Justin Rivera finished 3-4 with a double and a run scored.
• Jesse Alfalla collected three singles and drove in a run.
• Isaiah Velazco singled, walked twice, scored twice and drove in a run.
