Offensive Explosion for Lions Baseball in Doubleheader Sweep

NEWARK, NJ (March 22, 2025) - Georgian Court Baseball had it all working Saturday morning and afternoon in a doubleheader sweep at Bloomfield. The Lions offense erupted for 35 total runs in 13-3 and 22-4 wins over the Bears. 

Game 1 - Georgian Court 13, Bloomfield 3 - 7 Innings
How it Happened

• The Lions offense was humming with 13 runs on 14 hits.
• They crushed seven extra-base hits with three long balls.
• Bloomfield collected three runs on five hits.
• GCU played a clean game in the field, not making an error. 
• Bloomfield pitchers fanned eight and walked two. GCU struck out seven and walked four.
Carter Rieben walked to lead off the game and came in to score on Alex Elliott's RBI ground out.
• The Bears got the run right back with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the inning.
• GCU put up a three-spot in the second. Israel Garcia led off with a double and scored on Jack Greenspan's RBI single. With two outs, Larry Rodriguez made it a 4-1 game with a two-run homer to left, his first this season.
• The Lions put up single runs in the third and fourth innings. Garcia doubled home Frank Marra in the third and Rodriguez doubled in Oliver Santana in the fourth.
• Bloomfield kept things close for a bit. They hit a two-run homer in the third and it was 6-3 through four.
• Garcia continued to tear the cover off the ball. He launched a two-run shot in the fifth to push the lead to 8-3.
• GCU put the game away in the sixth scoring five more times. Marra and Sammy Cruz hit RBI singles and Garcia crushed his second homer of the day, driving in three more runs.
• That was all the scoring the Lions needed. They blanked the Bears over the final two frames and won in seven, 13-3.

Lion Stat Leaders
Jaydon Cabezudo got the win throwing 5.2 innings and striking out seven.
Israel Garcia was 4-4 with two home runs, two doubles, and six runs batted in.
Larry Rodriguez, was a triple short of the cycle with two runs and three RBI.
Frank Marra, Oliver Santana and Sammy Cruz each scored two runs.
Alex Elliott was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

For the Bears
• Andreas Frias homered and drove in two runs.
• Lixander Mendez had a single and scored a run.
• Elder Maldonado walked and scored in three at bats.

Game 2 - Georgian Court 22, Bloomfield 4
How it Happened

• Georgian Court scored 22 runs on 12 hits with just 14 runs being driven in by the Lions.
• Bloomfield made three errors, walked 13 and threw 10 wild pitches.
• Georgian Court also walked a bunch, nine batters in total, but struck out 13. 
• After a scoreless first inning, Georgian Court exploded in the second. They scored 11 runs on five hits and were helped out by three errors leading to four unearned runs.
Jack Greenspan and Larry Rodriguez started the scoring with run-scoring hits. Tomas Tamargo had the biggest blast, a grand slam to make it 11-0.
• An error on the infield allowed Bloomfield to get on the board with two runs in the second, but the GCU offense could not be stopped.
• They put up four more in the third without the benefit of a run-scoring hit and three in the fourth all on wild pitches.
• Leading 18-3 after four, GCU scored four times in the fifth. Matt DiOttavio tripled in a run and Colby McMahon scored DiOttavio with a triple. Another run-scoring wild pitch and a sacrifice fly brought the Lions to 22 runs.

Lion Stat Leaders
Samir Lopez started and allowed three runs, one earned on two hits with six strikeouts.
Tomas Tamargo drove in four runs with a grand slam and walked twice.
Larry Rodriguez finished 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Israel Garcia scored three times without registering an official at bat.
Frank Marra drove in two runs.
Alex Elliott was 2-3 with a run and an RBI. 
Ely Houston, Peyton Lee and Eduardo Eble-Lacouture all threw scoreless innings in relief. 

For the Bears
• Jordan Peart homered in the ninth inning.
• Joseph Kline picked up an RBI and drove in a run.

News and Notes
• Georgian Court set numerous early-program records including their 22 run outburst in game two.
• GCU starters Jaydon Cabezudo and Samir Lopez each transferred in from Bloomfield and got wins against their former teams.
Tomas Tamargo's home run was the first grand slam in program history.
Israel Garcia had the first two home run day for the Lions.
