Baseball's Comeback Against Dominican Falls Just Short in Game Two of Doubleheader

JACKSON, NJ (March 30, 2025) - Georgian Court Baseball nearly had an all-time comeback win in game two of their doubleheader against Dominican. The Lions fell just a run short as the Chargers swept GCU 17-5 and 7-6.

Game 1 - Dominican 17, Georgian Court 5 - 7 Innings
How it Happened

• Dominican picked up 17 runs on 15 hits with two home runs and two doubles.
• Georgian Court scored five runs on nine hits.
• There were plenty of errors. The Lions made five leading to six unearned runs.
• The Chargers made three errors and three of their five runs allowed were unearned.
• Georgian Court hitters struck out seven times and walked three. GCU pitchers walked eight and struck out two.
• Dominican took an early lead. They scored three times in the first. A bases loaded two-out, two-RBI single from Ty Gilligan the biggest hit in the inning made it 3-0 for pitcher Isaiah Figueroa.
• Figueroa didn't mind the layoff. He needed just five pitches to set the Lions down in the bottom of the first. 
• The Chargers added on in the second getting a pair of two-RBI singles to get on top 7-0. A line drive double play ended the inning or it could have been an even bigger inning.
• Georgian Court got their first base runner and their first hit in the third. They put two on with two outs, but a strikeout ended the inning without a run scoring.
• Austin Keefer threw a scoreless third, but the Chargers tagged him for three in the fourth. Juan Peralta went opposite field for a three-run home run and put Dominican up 10-0.
• Thanks to two Charger fielding errors to start the fourth, the Lions loaded the bases with nobody out. Joshua Moreno picked up an RBI single. Jack Greenspan and Jaylen Bruno brought in runs with a sacrifice fly and a ground out.
• Georgian Court ran into two-out trouble in the fifth as Dominican loaded the bases. They only pushed a run across though on a throwing error and extended the lead to 11-3.
• A two-out infield single from Israel Garcia brought in a run for GCU in the fifth.
• The Chargers led off the sixth with a home run to left. They added another on a bases loaded sacrifice fly.
• The Lions got one of those runs back in the home half of the inning as Carter Rieben singled home Jack Greenspan to make it a 13-5 Charger lead.
• Thanks to two more GCU errors, the Chargers scored four unearned runs in the seventh to bring their lead to 17-5. which was the final. 

Lion Stat Leaders
• Carter Rieben had three singles and drove in a run.
• Israel Garcia finished 3-4 with a run and an RBI.
• Jack Greenspan reached twice with a double and a walk. He also scored and knocked in a run.
• Alex Elliott singled and scored. 

For the Chargers
• Isaiah Figueroa went the first 5.2 innings. He struck out seven over 5.2 innings and allowed five runs, two earned on eight hits.
• Ian Labrador went 3-5 with a home run and drove in three runs.
• Juan Peralta hit a three-run home run as part of a 1-3 day. He scored three times. 
• Ty Gilligan went 2-3 wit two runs and two RBI.
• Kevin Hirsch singled, doubled and scored three runs. 

Game 2 - Dominican 7, Georgian Court 6
How it Happened

• Dominican scored seven runs on eight hits while the Lions scored six on seven hits.
• The Lions defense made two errors which led to three unearned runs. Dominican played a clean game in the field
• The Chargers stole three bases.
• Dominican scored the game's first seven runs and the Lions the final six. 
• Anthony Ortega started out red hot. He struck out the side in order to start the game. All three going down swinging.
• Dominican though cashed in a run in the second. A one-out double and a two-out pop fly single put the Chargers in front 1-0.
• The Chargers tacked on putting up a three spot in the third for a 4-0 lead. All three runs scored without the benefit of a hit. They came in on an error, a wild pitch and an RBI ground out.
• The Lions threatened in the bottom of the third putting two on with two out. Dominican escaped with a big strikeout to end the inning unscathed.
• A costly two-out error extended the fifth for Dominican and led to three unearned runs. The throwing error brought in a runner and one batter later Ian Labrador hit his second home run of the day as the Chargers went out in front 7-0.
• Georgian Court cracked the scoreboard with a run in the fifth. Oliver Santana led off with a double and scored on Tomas Tamargo's sacrifice fly. 
• The Lions got back into the game with a big five-run sixth inning. Kody Lewis and Oliver Santana each picked up RBI singles before Alex Elliot drove in three with a bases-clearing two-out double that hit the chalk down the right field line as the Lions got back to within one, 7-6.
• Georgian Court still trailed by one entering the bottom of the seventh. The Chargers though set them down 1-2-3 to hang on for the 7-6 win. 

Lion Stat Leaders
• Ryan Bilello threw two innings in relief. He allowed three unearned runs on three hits with two strikeouts. 
• Alex Elliott doubled and drove in three runs.
• Oliver Santana singled, doubled and scored two runs. 
• Kody Lewis was on base twice with a single and a walk. He also scored a run and drove one in.

For the Chargers
• Sammy Herrera got the start and threw the first 5.1 innings. he allowed three runs on four hits with eight strikeouts. 
• Ian Labrador homered and drove in two runs.
• Anthony Nigro singled twice and drove in a run. 
• Jean Peralta finished 1-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Up Next
Georgian Court plays a home doubleheader Tuesday, April 1 as they host Jefferson out of the CACC South starting at 2 pm.
