JACKSON, NJ (April 8, 2025) - Georgian Court Baseball and Mercy played a marathon, back-and-forth affair Tuesday afternoon. The teams traded the lead back and forth, but the Mavericks scored too much in then and secured a 14-9 win.
How it Happened
• Mercy scored 14 runs on 13 hits. They collected four doubles and the rest singles.
• Both teams struggled with errors. The Lions committed three and the Mavericks five. Despite the five errors, all nine GCU runs were earned while the Mavericks scored four unearned.
• There were plenty of long counts with 14 total walks and 12 total strikeouts.Â
• After two scoreless innings, Mercy put three on the board in the third. A wild pitch scored the first before an RBI single and a run-scoring groundout made it 3-0. Two of those three runs were unearned.Â
• The Lions stranded two more in scoring position to prevent it from being an even bigger inning.
• GCU got on the board in the bottom of the inning. They loaded the bases with one out and got a run in on a ground ball. Could have been more, but the Lions left the bases loaded.
• Mercy put up two more in the fourth as a two-out, two-run double upped the lead to 5-1.
• Georgian Court answered with a five-run fourth. Three runs were scored on wild pitches while
Jack Greenspan and
Israel Garcia had run-scoring hits and the Lions had their first lead, 6-5.
• The Mavericks put together an impressive two out rally in the fifth. After the first two struck out, the next seven all reached base.
• Zachary Ashline had a big two-out single and the Mavericks plated four to retake the lead, 9-6.
• Mercy scored two more in the sixth. Kolongi Goins with a long double up against the fence in center scored one and a run-scoring ground ball brought in another for an 11-6 lead.
• The Lions crept closer in the seventh putting up three runs. It starte with
Israel Garcia homering to left. A throwing and a run-scoring ground out scored two more getting GCU to within two, 11-9.
• The Mavericks put the first two on in the eighth and they came in to score on a pair of productive outs, pushing their lead back to four, 13-9.
