Shannon Mastrogiovanni's (Jr.) chip shot to the upper right corner with less than five minutes remaining in double overtime (4:54) secured a 2-1 victory for the #2 seed GCU Lions over #7 Caldwell College Tuesday afternoon in the CACC quarterfinals at Investors Savings Bank Field.
The Lions (14-7) and Cougars (6-11-1) played 85 minutes of scoreless soccer before
Candace Seaton (Jr.) broke the stalemate at 85:06 when she drilled home a
Kelly Lyons (So.) rebound, giving GCU a 1-0 lead. The crowd hadn't a chance to settle as Caldwell's
Brianna Diaz (Sr.) knocked in a
Nicole Laureigh (Sr.) rebound past GCU goalkeeper,
Lindsay Hammond (Sr.), a mere 18 seconds later (85:24) to tie the game at 1-1. The two squads would play a shotless first overtime period leading to the thrilling conclusion.
Georgian Court outshot Caldwell, 18-3, including a 4-0 advantage in double overtime.
Hammond improves to 14-7 with one save on three total shots by the Cougars. Caldwell keeper,
Kristina Cabales (Fr.) suffered the loss garnering nine saves, including two in the final OT.
The Lions will now take on #6 seed Dominican College (9-5-4) who defeated #3 Chestnut Hill College, 2-1, earlier in the day. The semifinal contest will take place on Thursday, November 5th at the Kirkwood Soccer Club in New Castle, DE. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 PM.
