Lions Nip Nyack, 70-67, in Season-Closing Thriller

LAKEWOOD, NJ-Lauren Staats (Dunellen, NJ) waited until the final game of the year to have her best performance of the campaign as the Lions' sophomore guard drained a game-high 21 points, including the game-winning three pointer with 16 seconds remaining in overtime as the Lions (13-14, 9-9 CACC) dropped the visiting Lady Warriors of Nyack College (13-12, 6-10 CACC), 70-67, Saturday afternoon at the GCU Wellness Center. The victory, GCU's seventh over their last nine games, finish the 2008-09 season with their best record ever as a NCAA Division II program.

Staats shot 7-for-15 from the field, including a season-best 5-for-8 from beyond the three-point arc. Her game-winning shot put the Lions up, 68-67. Christina White (Fr.-New Brunswick, NJ)closed out a stellar rookie year for GCU with a 15-point effort. The freshman forward led the Lions with 16 points in Tuesday's defeat at University of the Sciences. Dee Varley (Jr.-Little Egg Harbor, NJ) posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards, including a lay-up with two ticks left on the clock, while senior Patti Foley (Lake Grove, NY) contributed 12 points and eight rebounds in the final game of her collegiate career.  

Victoria Sweet (So.-Harlem, NY) contributed a double-double of her own as she led Nyack College with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Jasmine Minter (Jr.-Richmond, VA) (18 points) and Shelly Yount (Jr.-Belvidere, NJ) (13 points) also attained double-digits for the Lady Warriors.

Despite being outshot from the field (45.8% to 39.7%), the Lions were able to drain 14 of 19 free throws (73.7%) vs. 9 of 16 (56.3%) for the Lady Warriors. GCU also won the battle of the boards, 70-67.
