Georgian Court Soccer Suffers Crushing Defeat in Season Opener vs. #4 College of St. Rose

The GCU Lions soccer club suffered a crushing season-opening defeat to nationally-ranked College of St. Rose, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Investors Savings Bank Field in Lakewood, NJ. St. Rose’s Amanda Deck (Jr.) drilled home a direct free kick from just beyond the 18-yard box with 1:04 remaining in regulation to break the one-all tie and solidify the victory for the #4 Golden Knights (1-0).

Kelly Guerin (Jr.) put St. Rose up, 1-0, 26:40 into the contest when the Sutton, MA native chipped in a shot from the midfield circle, a ball that took a quirky bounce over the head of Lions’ senior goalkeeper, Lindsay Hammond , on the rain-saturated grass. Georgian Court freshman, Taylor Reinecke, drilled home her first collegiate goal on an Candace Seaton  pass in the second half to tie the game at one apiece.

Hammond made six saves on 14 shots, while falling to 0-1 on the season. Junior Deanna Esposito (1-0) earned the victory in net for the Golden Eagles after relieving starting net-minder, Susan Cowan (So.), with the game tied in the second stanza.

The Lions (0-1) take to the field again on Sunday afternoon when they battle Stonehill College (1-0) at 1:00 PM.
