LAKEWOOD, NJ-The Georgian Court basketball squad, unable to hold on to three seperate nine-point, first-half advantages, fell to the Lady Rams of Philadelphia University, 80-68, Thursday evening in the GCU Wellness Center.
A free throw by
Shawna Wert (pictured) at 10:32 in the first stanza gave the Lions a 24-15 lead. The Lady Rams charged back, outscoring the home club. 25-15, the remainder of the way and led, 40-39, going into the locker room.
Lauren Staats drained five first-half three pointers for GCU, but was held scoreless in the second frame.
Shawna Wert collected 10 points of her own, including a 3-for-3 effort from the free throw line. In fact, the squad shot an impressive 91% from the charity stripe in the half.
The two teams tied at 50-all at 15:12. Philly would take control at this point, outscoring the Lions, 30-18, the rest of the way.
Philly's
Jessica Romano (Sr.-Horsham, PA) paced all scorers with 25 points (9-for-16) while shooting 7-for-7 from the foul line. Teammate
Kate Brennan (Stratford, NJ) played all 40 minutes, scoring 23 points of her own, including a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the arc and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe.
Wert led the Lions with 21 points (6-for-11) while
Dana Wert drained 11. The Wert sisters were again golden at the free throw line shooting a combined 11-for-12. GCU shot 88% from the line as a team.
Georgian Court falls to 3-8 (1-3 CACC) while the Lady Rams remain undefeated in the conference at 4-0 (6-6 overall).
GCU will take the court again Saturday afternoon when they host Caldwell College at noon.
