LAKEWOOD, NJ- A season-high 28 points from senior
Lauren Staats, including eight three-pointers, was not enough to get the Georgian Court University basketball squad its elusive first victory of the season (0-10) as the Lions fell to visiting Bloomsburg University, 71-57, Sunday afternoon at the GCU Wellness Center.
Staats shot 9-for-25 from the field and 8-for-18 from beyond the three-point stripe in a 40-minute, complete game effort.
The Huskies (7-1) and Lions both shot poorly in the first half, shooting 25% and 22.2%, respectively. The Lions' offense showed terrific energy in the second stanza, outshooting Bloomsburg, 48.5% to 37%. GCU held a 39-38 advantage in the rebound column.
It could be said that the game was won at the free-throw line as the Huskies drained 27 of 31 free throws while Georgian Court countered by going 5-for-13 at the charity stripe.
GCU freshman,
Chinyere Ozuzu, registered a double-double off the Lions' bench, sinking 10 points and snagging a game-high 11 boards in 24 minutes of play.
Three Huskies registered double-digits in the scoring column, led by
Kelsey Gallagher's (Jr.-East Stroudsburg, PA) 22 points (6-for-13), including four three-pointers and a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. She also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in 40 minutes.
Dana Wieller (So.-Bethlehem, PA) deposited 18 points (4-for-17), which included 8 of 10 free-throw attempts. She also distributed four assists and collected four boards in 37 minutes. Sophomore
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland, PA) sank 10 points, which included a 4-for-4 effort from the line, in 18 total minutes.
Georgian Court returns to action on Thursday, December 30th when they welcome East Stroudsburg State University to "The Well" for a 1:00 PM contest.
