NEW CASTLE, DE-The Georgian Court University basketball squad, despite 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds from senior
Kiki Mayweather, remain winless on the season as the Lions dropped its CACC-opener, 75-61, Saturday afternoon at Wilmington University.
The Wildcats and Lions entered the contest as the only squads in the entire east region yet to experience victory this season. Wilmington improves to 1-6 (1-1 CACC) while GCU drops to 0-5 (0-1 CACC). In fact, Georgian Court has lost nine consecutive games, dating back to 2/18/10.
Ashley Davison (Sr.-Willingboro, NJ) (career-high 28 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals) led the way for the Wildcats, which came up with a game-deciding 21-3 run in the latter stages of the second half.
Silvia Jankova (Jr.-Banska Bysterica, Slovakia) (13 points, 5 boards),
Brittney Robinson (Jr.-Columbia, MD) (12 points, 5 rebounds) and
Lauren Brown (Fr.-Bowie, MD) (10 points) also reached double digits for Wilmington.
GCU was the better club at the onset, with Wilmington missing their first 12 shots. Meanwhile, Georgian Court raced to a 27-12 lead with 5:27 left in the first half and took a 33-27 lead into the locker room.
The Wild Cats started the second stanza with a 9-1 run to grab their first lead (36-34), only to see the Lions rattle off a 12-4 effort to go back on top, 46-40 (13:39). Wilmington answered with its 21-3 run, taking the lead on a Robinson hoop at the 9:19 mark (50-48) and eventually arriving at a 72-56 lead with under a minute to go. WU shot 33%, overcoming a 23% first half showing; GCU was the opposite, shooting 35% overall but just 26% in the second period.
Georgian Court gets back at it Tuesday evening at 6PM when the Lions welcome University of the Sciences (3-2, 0-0 CACC) to the Wellness Center.
