PHILADELPHIA, PA-The Philadelphia University Lady Rams (10-9, 8-3 CACC) knocked off the Georgian Court University Lions (6-14, 4-9 CACC) 58-53 on Thursday evening at the Gallagher Athletic Center.
Two made free throws from PhilaU sophomore forward Christine Wooding (Northfield, NJ/ Mainland) at 14:52 gave the Lady Rams a 9-6 lead, but GCU's Shawna Wert (pictured) tied it up with a trey just a minute later. Wooding finished with five points.
The Lady Rams were still close at 24-20 at 6:40, but freshman guard Taylor Peltzer (Holland, PA/ Archbishop Wood) caught fire going 3-3 from beyond the arc to help PhilaU on a 17-8 run to finish out the half. Peltzer had nine points in the contest.
The Lions' Shawna Wert led all scorers with 25 points, racking up 16 in the first half alone.
PhilaU freshman forward Kristen Blye (Chester Springs, PA/ Downingtown East) completed a three-point play on a bucket and made free throw to end the half, with the Lady Rams on top 41-28. Blye finished the night with five points.
GCU sprung into the second stanza on a 12-0 run to make it 41-40, but Romano added a bucket to keep PhilaU ahead.
Lady Lion Dana Wert knocked down two free-throws at 12:44 to give her squad a 46-45 lead, their first in the second half. D. Wert tallied 12 points in the match.
With GCU up 53-51, senior forward Kate Brennan (Stratford, NJ/ Sterling) tied it at 53 with two made charity stripers. Brennan had 11 points on the night.
Wooding gave PhilaU the lead back 54-53 at 1:50 with a made free-throw and PhilaU would hold on for a 58-53 victory.
GCU was scheduled to travel to Nyack College Saturday afternoon, but that game has been postponed due to the impending snowstorm. The game will now be played on Thursday, February 25th at a to-be-determined time.
The Lions will next play on Tuesday evening as they head back to the City of Brotherly Love for a 7PM contest at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. Georgian Court defeated USP, 67-61, back on January 19th.
