LAKEWOOD, NJ- In a battle between two extremely desperate squads, the Georgian Court University basketball team came painfully close to its first victory of the season, but eventually fell to visiting Wilmington University, 65-62, in overtime Tuesday evening in the GCU Wellness Center.
The Wildcats (2-11, 2-4 CACC), after losing each of its past four games by an average of over 45 points, secured its first triumph since defeating these same GCU Lions, 75-61, back on December 4th in Delaware.
Georgian Court (0-12, 0-5 CACC) outshot Wilmington, 37.7% to 30.3% from the floor and owned a 45-44 advantage in the rebounds column. The Wildcats, however, drained 23 of 36 free throws while GCU dropped in 17 of 28.
Jasmine Lewis tied a personal season-high by leading all players with 17 points, which included the game-tying, overtime-inducing layup (57-57) with 21 seconds remaining in regulation.
Brittany Baker (11 points) and
Lauren Staats (10 points) joined Lewis with double-digit efforts while Baker's team-high 11 rebounds solidified for her a double-double. She also blocked three shots.
Tara Fearon contributed eight boards.
Four players achieved double-digits for Wilmington, including
Lauren Brown (Fr.-Bowie, MD) (14 points),
Ashley Davison (Sr.-Willingboro, NJ) (13 points),
Courtney Coleman (Fr.-Richmond, VA) (12 points) and
Candace Phrance (Jr.-Crofton, MD) (12 points).
Erica MacFadyen (Sr.-Jersey City, NJ) led the Wildcats with 11 rebounds.
The Lions, having played its last five games at home, take to the road for the first time since December 9th this Thursday when they travel to Philadelphia University for a 4:00 PM CACC contest.
