CALDWELL, N.J. - Freshman forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn) poured in a career-high 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Caldwell College women's basketball team defeated Georgian Court University, 79-58 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at the George R. Newman Center. The win marks the fifth in a row for the Cougars, who improve to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Lions remain winless on the season at 0-14, 0-7 CACC.
Anderson helped the Cougars reel off a 22-7 run in the first half by scoring 10 points en route to a 28-13 lead with six minutes left in the half. Two free throws from junior guard Willeen Capehart (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) and a pair of baskets by sophomore center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) in the final minute of the half allowed Caldwell to take a 42-25 lead into the halftime break. Anderson had 13 points while making 5-of-6 from the field in the first period. The Cougars crashed the offensive boards for 16 rebounds and tallied 27 second chance points in the first half.
The Lions were able to cut the lead to 14 after two baskets by Brittany Baker and a jumper from Chinyere Ozuzu made the score 49-35 Caldwell with 13:44 remaining. But they never came any closer, as the Cougars maintained control and led by as many as 23 points to wrap up their fifth straight victory. Caldwell shot 50.0 percent (16-of-32) from the floor in the second half and finished the game with a season-high 22 offensive rebounds while out-rebounding GCU 46-37.
Anderson, whose previous career high was 22 points against East Stroudsburg University on Dec. 18, made 13-of-17 (76.5 percent) from the field for the game. Eight of her 11 boards came on the offensive end, as she registered her fourth double-double of the season. Sophomore guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) added 10 points and four assists, while Felix grabbed 11 rebounds to go with seven points in the win. Ozuzu led the Lions with 16 points and four steals while Baker contributed 14 points and eight rebounds.
