Orangeburg, NY -The Dominican College women's basketball team improved to 5-6 overall and 5-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play after turning back the visiting Lions of Georgian Court University, 66-51, Saturday afternoon in a game played on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.
Dominican led by as many as seven points three separate times in the first stanza and took a 21-12 lead with 5:09 left before the break. The Lions came back to score the final six points of the first half to cut the deficit to 21-18 at the intermission.
GCU cut the lead to a single points (23-22) early in the second half, but the Lady Chargers charged back with a 7-0 run to regain an eight point advantage (30-22) with 15:46 to play. A three point Lion basket once again cut the lead to one, 43-42, with just under eight minutes to go but DC answered back outscoring GCU 12-4 over the next four minutes to go up 55-46 and never looked back en route to the 66-51 victory.
Junior Bianca Harris (Teaneck, NJ) led four Lady Chargers in double figures with the double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Shannon Lavelle (Floral Park, NY) added 11 points and a team leading four assists, while Samantha Klunk (York, PA) scored 10 points.
LaShonda Hathorne (Queens, NY) came off the bench to net 10 points, while starter Marley Klunk (York, PA) added 11 caroms in the win.
Shauneia McPhearson topped the Lions with 11 points in 26 minutes while Christina White registered a double-double (10 points, 10 boards) in 35 minutes of action.
Brittany Baker snared a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with eight points. Tahira Matthews also reached double-digits in the rebounds column with 10 while scoring seven points of her own.
Georgian Court (2-11, 1-5 CACC) returns to the Wellness Center where they will host Philadelphia University (10-4, 5-1 CACC) Tuesday evening at 6:00 PM.
