CALDWELL, N.J. - Senior guard
Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) scored a game-high 28 points as the Caldwell College women’s basketball team earned an 87-71 victory over Georgian Court in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center. The win snaps an eight-game losing streak for the Cougars, who are now 2-8 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Lions fall to 1-5, 1-2 CACC.
Two three-pointers by sophomore forward
Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) and another from Jones helped Caldwell jump out to an 11-0 lead. Georgian Court pulled to within five, 30-25 with 5:16 left in the half before the Cougars closed out the period with a 15-6 run for a 45-31 halftime advantage. Jones went 5-of-7 from three-point range and scored 19 points, as Caldwell shot 47.2 percent from the field compared to 34.2 percent for the Lions.
Georgian Court cut the deficit to 12 early in the second half before three-pointers from freshman guard
Fahime Farzanessa (Cologne, Germany/Humboldt) and Jones made the score 58-38 with 16:30 to play. The lead grew to as many as 22 points, as junior forward
Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) scored 12 of her 20 points after halftime. The Cougars ended up making 9-of-12 (75.0 percent) from beyond the arc for the game and holding the Lions to 36.4 percent shooting overall.
Jones hit 6-of-8 from long range, matching her career high for threes in a game. She also added five rebounds and five assists. Anderson notched her eighth double-double of the season with 20 points and a career-best 16 rebounds to go with three blocks and three steals. Senior center
Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) shot 7-of-9 from the floor en route to 15 points, while sophomore guard
Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) and freshman guard
Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) each dished out five assists.
Shauneia McPherson led GCU with 19 points while
Christina White garnered her second double-double of the campaign with 13 rebounds and 11 points. The Lions travel to Goldey-Beacom College Tuesday evening for another CACC showdown. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
