GCU Hoops Headlines NGWSD With Solid 72-65 Conference Victory over Post University

Jasmine Lewis
LAKEWOOD, NJ- On the day Georgian Court University hosted its annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration, the GCU Lions basketball squad headlined the festive event in supreme fashion as the home team downed visiting Post University in CACC play, 72-65, Saturday afternoon in front of season-high Wellness Center crowd of 225.

A Tahira Matthews' lay-up at 16:36 in the first half gave Georgian Court a 7-6 lead and an advantage the Lions would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. GCU nurtured its lead to a first-half high-water mark of 38-23 with 1:54 remaining before intermission, courtesy of a 13-0 run for the Lions. The Eagles (5-15, 3-10 CACC) would close the half with a 5-0 spurt of its own, entering the second stanza down by a 38-28 deficit.

After a jumper from Shauneia Matthews increased GCU's lead to 42-29 with 17:03 remaining, Post University rattled off eight unanswered points to cut the score to 42-37. Georgian Court immediately dialed up its offensive prowess and answered with a 21-9 run to take a commanding 63-46 lead with 4:50 left on the clock. The Eagles countered with an offensive flurry off its own by outscoring the Lions, 19-9, to close out the contest, but Georgian Court refused to loosen its grip and filed away its second home victory of the season.

Four Lions netted double-digits in the scoring column, including a team-high 15 from Ebony Sellers. Brittany Baker contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and a blocked shot. Tahira Matthews fell a rebound short of a double-double (nine total) to go along with her 10 points. Ryan McGrath also drained 10 points in 16 total minutes while Jasmine Lewis distributed a game-high six assists in 19 minutes off the GCU bench.

Post University's Kelli Reynolds (Sr.-Milford, CT) led all scorers with 21 points in 36 minutes of action. Aubrey Latham (Jr.-Mystic, CT) contributed 17 points and nine boards for the Eagles. Casey Brooks (Jr.-Highland, NY) contributed 10 points for the visitors.

GCU hits the road Tuesday evening when they visit University of the Sciences for a 7:00 PM CACC contest. The Devils defeated the Lions, 89-62, in the Wellness Center back on January 24.
