PHILADELPHIA, Pa.-The University of the Sciences moved into 3rd place in the CACC North with a 69-58 win over Georgian Court University Wednesday evening at Bobby Morgan Arena, utilizing sharp foul shooting down the wire to hold off the Lions.
The Devils (9-9, 7-4 CACC) led 35-26 at the half thanks to a 13-6 ending spree and extended the gap to 48-34 (10:15) before GCU (5-12, 5-7 CACC) rallied. A 9-2 flurry carved the deficit to 50-43 at the 4:57 mark but that was as close as they came. Sciences sank 13-16 from the line the rest of the way to help repel the comeback.
Brianne Traub (19 points),
Becca Ruggear (15 points) and
Elsebeth Birman (14 points, 7 assists) led the way for the Devils while
Shauneia McPhearson (18 points, 7 rebounds) and
Tahira Matthews (16 points) sparked the GCU offense.
Sciences had the upper hand in shooting (45%-36%), at the line (19-28; GCU 10-18 FT) and with the ball (21/15 assist/turnover ratio to GCU’s 11/22 totals), more than making up for the Lions 46-32 rebound advantage.
Georgian Court returns home this Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. CACC contest vs. Nyack College.
