Lakewood, N.J.- Highlighted by a season-high 25 points from
Ashiri Broadwater and the first double-double of the year for
Elizabeth Lawler, the Georgian Court University women's basketball snapped its five-game slide with a solid 74-64 victory over visiting Wilmington University Wednesday evening in the Wellness Center.
The Lions, with their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win of the campaign (1-3), improve to 2-8 on the season while the visiting Wildcats drop to 2-7 (1-4 CACC).
The South Division foes were neck and neck for the first 13:05 of the opening half with three stalemates and neither team leading by more than four points at any time during that stretch. A foul shot by
Brittany Baker at 6:55 provided the Lions with a 19-14 lead. A Lawler layup with 5:28 remaining increased the GCU lead to nine points at 23-14 ... the pinnacle of the stanza.
Wilmington would proceed to to mount a speedy 15-0 spurt, providing the Wildcats with a 29-23 advantage wih 2:47 remaining. A
Tashea Plummer (Jr.-Landover Hills, Md.) jumper with 39 ticks left in the half made the score 33-27 visitors headed into intermission.
A pair of
Tahira Matthews free throws at 16:44 in the second completed a 7-1 GCU run to tie the affair at 34-34. The opponents would not be separated by more than three points until a Broadwater foul shot at 12:21 put the Lions up 46-42. GCU pressed the offensive gas pedal at that point, jetting on a 20-7 run to secure a commanding 66-49 advantage with 6:22 left.
The Wildcats would not roll over as Wilmington creeped within five points (69-64) with 47 seconds to go after a 15-3 sprint. GCU reacted with a 5-0 response to put the win in the books.
Broadwater shot 8-for-13 from the floor and 9-for-13 from the charity stripe in netting her game-high point total. Lawler drained 14 points and snared 10 boards while tallying a contest-best four blocks. Baker contributed 11 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists, and three thefts.
Lauren Brown (Sr.-Bowie, Md.) sparked the Wilmington offense with her team-leading 15 points and three assists.
Cari Callaway (Jr.-Newark, Del.) added 14 points and a Wilmington-leading three steals.
Theresa Mitchell (Jr.-Hartford, Conn.) dropped in 10 points for the Wildcats while
Jasmine Lee (Fr.-Chestertown, Md.) gathered six boards for the team.
The Lions take the floor again this Saturday afternoon at the University of the Sciences in CACC action. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
